It may seem to sound like hyperbole to accuse Jack Smith and the Democrats of trying to destroy the Republican Party. Nevertheless, I did exactly that in 2021 after the January 6 Commission was proposed.
When it became obvious that Democrats weren't interested in investigating what happened at the Capitol that day and were only interested in "proving" that Trump tried to overthrow the government, the only rational conclusion to be reached was that they were out to destroy a political party.
"Democrats aren’t interested in anything that doesn’t damage Donald Trump, his supporters, and the entire Republican Party," I wrote. "But the fact that radical Black Lives Matter and antifa activists had American cities under siege while milquetoast Democratic mayors let them run wild in their streets bears as much examination as QAnon or Proud Boys actions on Jan. 6th."
Meanwhile, Jack Smith went about the business of carrying out the most extensive domestic surveillance operation since 9/11.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is looking into the unconstitutional excesses of Smith and his goons, whose goal was nothing less than the destruction of the Republican Party.
He accuses Smith of taking "partisanship to a new level."
Jack Smith sought the toll records of 16 Members of Congress and also obtained the content of Member communications, breaching Speech or Debate.
Smith’s subpoenas targeted hundreds of Republican groups and individuals.
He subpoenaed communications those folks had with the media and legislative branch.
He also subpoenaed 87 Trump White House phones, knowing they’d include communications with Members of Congress – 44 Members, to be exact. He failed to filter out Speech or Debate privileged information, even though he and his team knew they’d scoop it up with their requests.
What I can say today is that Smith also obtained communications from members of the media, to include: 60 Minutes, Associated Press, Bloomberg, CBS, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, LA Times, Mark Levin Show, Media Research Center, NBC, NPR, NY Magazine, Reuters, The Federalist, The Washington Post, Washington Times and the Wall Street Journal.
What will the partisan media say about this disgraceful government overreach?
As it turns out, not much.
This was not an "overzealous" prosecution. It was deliberate. There was nothing emotional about it. It was frighteningly systematic in its approach to dismantling Republican networks, intimidating ordinary Republicans, and trying to ensnare elected officials in an investigation designed to smear their reputations and connect them to the rowdies who trashed the Capitol building.
That's not even the worst of it, as The Federalist's Ben Weingarten points out.
"A bigger problem than the hypocritical and hyper-partisan nature of the Fourth Estate is the reality that the Biden administration’s Soviet-style assault on political dissenters has done catastrophic damage," Weingarten writes. "It is not clear where the victims can or will go for recompense, nor that the aggressors will face justice for their depredations — guaranteeing worse abuses are to come."
Weingarten has a dire warning if we don't wake up.
Self-evident apathy, indifference to weaponization, an unwillingness to do what is necessary to punish the aggressors and reward the victims prevail in Washington, D.C. — or worse, a belief that such weaponization is merited. Ultimately, it is fatal to our republic. The reality is that even if every executive and legislative branch official were genuinely dedicated to de-weaponization, the genie can never be fully back in the bottle. But it is a travesty that most of our purported public servants do not even try.
And it is not only Trump administration officials, or conservative journalists, or small-dollar Republican donors who will bear the brunt of it. We all will.
We'll likely get a taste of it if the Democrats win just four more seats than the GOP in the midterm election. A Democratic House will not only endlessly investigate Trump and Republicans, but it will also attempt another impeachment. They will do it for no other reason than their rabid, spittle-flecked base is demanding it.
As we've seen with Jack Smith, Democrats are experts at making a mockery of the Constitution.
