The Democrats now have the perfect storm they’d been hoping for to gin up turnout against Republican candidates in the midterm elections. An October 8 ICE arrest in the Marble Hill neighborhood in the Bronx ended with a federal agent firing roughly seven times into the vehicle, hitting and wounding the criminal illegal alien in the neck as ICE was trying to arrest him. All of this happened while the suspect’s five-year-old son was in the car. The child was unharmed and is reported to be in the custody of family.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the suspect may have tried to run over ICE agents as they attempted to apprehend him.
"At least one ICE agent discharged seven rounds, striking the driver in the neck below his left ear," New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the news media on Thursday night.
ABC7 News reported, “Responding NYPD officers noticed the ICE agents, and the suspect handcuffed on the ground. Officers then put the suspect in an NYPD vehicle and administered aid. He was taken to New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he is in stable condition.”
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the suspect, Oscar Belgal (28), is in the custody of federal agents. It’s been reported that he is allegedly a gang member with ties to the Trinitarios gang. This is the gang responsible for the shooting of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in the face and arm in New York last July.
According to Newsweek, “New York court records show Belgal was arrested in December 2023 and in January 2025. He is the defendant in multiple pending criminal cases, including cases involving robbery, weapons, menacing, and drug- and theft-related charges. Court records indicate Belgal has pleaded not guilty to those charges.” But of course.
In a statement, ICE said, “This criminal illegal alien was arrested by the NYPD on December 7, 2023, but was released into the community a few days later by reckless Democrat sanctuary policies that put American lives at risk.”
On October 8, at approximately 4:00 PM ET, ICE officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx, New York, to arrest a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession. He has associations to the Trinitarios gang, the same gang who brutally shot a CBP officer last year. This criminal illegal alien was arrested by the NYPD on December 7, 2023, but was released into the community a few days later by reckless Democrat sanctuary policies that put American lives at risk. During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured. ICE officers immediately rendered aid. The individual is alive and at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are on the scene. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available. When dangerous illegal aliens are released back onto the streets by radical sanctuary politicians, our officers are forced to make arrests at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments. Our officers should not have to risk their lives, and innocent Americans should not have to face unnecessary danger, because sanctuary politicians refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement.

The left’s protest machine is already gearing up. Since the Bronx is in Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul’s state, commie mayor Zohran Mamdani’s city, and commie Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district, rather than try to calm the public, the leftist rage factory is ramping up quickly.

Both Mamdani and Hochul revealed that they had been in touch with the White House to express their anger over the incident, and in Mamdani’s case, he tried unsuccessfully to negotiate the release of the suspected gang member.

I expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged them to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York. Bronx: West 225th Street& Marble Hill Avenue, a man was shot and injured during a targeted @ICEgov enforcement operation earlier today, sparking chaos on the streets of the Bronx. According to the @DHSgov, ICE agents were attempting to arrest a Dominican national around 4 p.m. Department of Homeland Security said the man has a prior grand larceny conviction, multiple arrests for assault, robbery, drug and weapons offenses, and alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang. @DHSgov also stated that he was arrested by the @NYPDnews in December 2023 but released days later. During the operation, an ICE agent discharged his firearm, injuring the man. Officers immediately provided medical assistance, and he was transported to a local hospital. The @FBI @NewYorkFBI and Homeland Security Investigations responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation. The federal agent-involved shooting has drawn agitators to the streets of the Bronx, where protests have escalated into chaotic scenes, unrest, and confrontations with police.

The Trinitarios is a Dominican gang with origins on Rikers Island dating back to 1993. Dominican inmates formed the gang inside the jail. Since then, it has grown from a prison gang into a street gang that is well-known to New York City and federal law enforcement.
AOC immediately seized on the opportunity to fan the flames of unrest, demand the abolition of ICE, and even go after Target Corporation for allowing federal agents to stage arrest operations from some of its stores.

The details of the shooting, the suspect, the agents involved, and other factors are sure to come out over the course of the next several days.

What you can be sure of is that this event is the catalyst for the sort of protests leftists like to do in election years. The left will ignore the truth, create false narratives, and try to squeeze every last drop of fake anger out of this to get Democrats to vote.
I recently reported on another attempt by the left to use the accidental death of Nolan Wells for the same reasons. In that piece, I pointed to the now familiar pattern: “Leftist operatives waited patiently all summer for some black man or kid to get killed by a cop, preferably a white cop, but that didn’t happen, so now they’ve decided this is what they have to work with. And so they will.”
In that piece, I pointed out how the left exploited the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and George Floyd during election years. They will try to do the same thing here, even if the victim is an alleged violent gang member who survived his injuries.
On cue, the leftist protests have already started.

All of this only makes it more important for law enforcement to release bodycam footage as soon as is practicable. Nothing quells potentially violent unrest like indisputable video evidence that the suspect was in the wrong.
Absent that and for the time being, we now can expect Mamdani, AOC, Hochul, and the rest of the Democrat Party to frame this incident as something it was not, and to put their imagined interpretation of events at the foot of every Republican across the country running for office in November.
The Republican rapid response team will need to aggressively frame this situation as what it truly is – leftists once again defending violent criminal aliens, putting the safety of everyday Americans at risk.
Strategically, rather than wait to respond, Republicans need to proactively and preemptively advance the true narrative of what happened in the Bronx. They need to do it with video, and they need to force the Democrats to defend their dangerous sanctuary city policies. Otherwise, Republicans will put themselves on the defensive in this final month of the campaign, while Democrats cynically exploit this situation to stimulate voter turnout.
