I don't know how many times this needs to be said, but Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) isn't switching parties. The media has spent months treating every offhand remark and every friendly word for a Republican as proof that he's halfway out the door, and the whole exercise has become exhausting. This weekend, the speculation got a fresh jolt, and once again, the press is reading far more into it than the facts can support.
On Saturday, Fetterman sat down for a live interview with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett at the Texas Tribune Festival. When an audience member asked, "Why not become an independent?" Fetterman replied, "Because I'm a lifelong Republican."
Garrett cut in with "Democrat" as the crowd burst out laughing. Fetterman shook his head and giggled.
"That's a moment right there! That's clippable, ladies and gentlemen! Circulate!" Garrett told the audience.
"I guarantee you, that's gonna break through. That'll get clipped," Fetterman said. "I'm a lifelong Democrat," he added moments later.

Mediaite labeled the exchange a Freudian slip, and plenty of others will surely run with the same theory. Let's be honest, here. Sometimes people just misspeak, and it doesn't mean anything. Anyone who has fielded questions in front of a live audience knows how easily the wrong word can come out.
The timing made the clip irresistible, though. Chatter about Fetterman bolting from the Democrat Party has been building for months, and it spiked after he appeared by video at the first-ever Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas earlier this month. He also skipped the 2024 Democratic National Convention, and those two moves have left many people on the left uneasy, and many on the right salivating as if it were a legitimate possibility.

The left-wing media panicked anyway.
"I think what it tells us more than anything is that John Fetterman will probably never run as a Democrat again. He's got no shot at winning reelection as a Democrat. So the bigger question is, as we head into 2028, is he running as a Republican or as an independent, or is he not running at all?" NBC Congressional Correspondent Ryan Nobles said of Fetterman’s video appearance at the Republican convention.
Republicans would have no reason to vote for Fetterman as a Republican, either. If I lived in Pennsylvania, as much as I appreciate Fetterman breaking with his party, I’d support any conservative Republican over him without hesitation. The problem for Fetterman is that the media only notices when he breaks from his party; they don’t pay as much attention to the times he sticks with them, as on the SAVE America Act.
The speculation about Fetterman is amusing, but it’s nothing to get excited about if you’re a Republican, and it’s nothing to panic about if you’re a Democrat. If Fetterman were an actual moderate, then it would be different, but Fetterman isn't a moderate. He votes with Democrats 95% of the time, so he’s not going anywhere unless Democrats boot him in a 2028 primary.
And, yeah, they probably will.
