For over a year now, conservatives have entertained a fantasy about Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.). Why? Because he believes in border security. He stands with Israel. He scoffs at socialism. His recent slamming of Zohran Mamdani helped too. Some on the right are convinced he's one good push away from switching parties. I've never bought it. In the end, he’s still a Democrat, votes 95% of the time with the party, and is the furthest thing from a moderate. So sorry, he’ll never switch parties, and still embodies much of what’s wrong with the Democrat Party.
Let me explain why.
Let’s rewind to 2022, shall we? That’s when Fetterman ran for the Senate and won. Did you know that he campaigned on a pledge to abolish the filibuster? The reason was obvious. Joe Biden occupied the Oval Office, Democrats controlled the House and Senate, and Republicans were using the filibuster to block the left's most radical legislation, namely their radical federal takeover of elections. Fetterman even pointed to the Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade that year as a reason to scrap the rule and ram through federal abortion legislation.
Fast forward to today. President Donald Trump is back in the White House, Republicans run Congress, and suddenly Fetterman loves the filibuster.
This week, he gave his most detailed explanation yet for the reversal, writing in a Washington Post op-ed that his earlier support for eliminating the rule was "horribly wrong." He now describes the filibuster as a safeguard preventing Trump from enacting whatever laws, deregulation, or procedures he wants without restraint.
Funny how that works, isn’t it. Good enough for me, not good enough for thee.
Now, the filibuster has frustrated both parties over the years, killing Democrats' efforts to overhaul our elections and Republican efforts to pass election integrity legislation. The rule didn't change. The only thing that changed is which party it inconveniences.

Fetterman claims Americans upset with the Republican-led Congress and the Trump administration would be far more alarmed if bills could pass on a simple majority vote. He wrote that without the filibuster, the SAVE America Act would already be law.
That's supposed to scare us?
The SAVE America Act enjoys huge support in both parties and across every demographic. That's the real problem here. Democrats are abusing the filibuster to block legislation that an overwhelming majority of the public supports, then dressing it up as a noble defense of democracy. And let's get really honest here: the moment Democrats regain power, nuking the filibuster will magically become the righteous position again. Fetterman will find a way to explain that flip too.
Fetterman is no less a hypocrite on the filibuster than any of his fellow Democrats. Conservatives can keep dreaming about a party switch, but he keeps showing us exactly who he is. Meanwhile, he has inadvertently handed Republicans a road map. If Democrats will nuke the rule the second it suits them, Republicans might as well beat them to the punch and pass the SAVE America Act while they can.
