Democrats Can't Rewrite Their Abrego Garcia Blunder

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) has walked himself straight into a political disaster—and now, instead of backing off, he’s digging in deeper. He chose to make Kilmar Abrego Garcia the poster child for his attacks on President Trump’s immigration policies, long before the facts were fully known. At the time, Van Hollen painted Abrego Garcia as a victim—a so-called “Maryland man” unfairly deported. What he didn’t wait for were the details: that Abrego Garcia is an illegal immigrant with confirmed MS-13 ties, accused of human trafficking, and facing credible allegations of domestic abuse.

Worse still, Van Hollen didn’t just tweet support or issue a press release—he flew to El Salvador on the taxpayers’ dime to meet the guy face-to-face, sipping margaritas and turning the whole thing into a media stunt. It was a shameless spectacle.

Now that the full picture has emerged, Van Hollen and his Democrat allies are in too deep to admit they got it wrong. Instead of correcting course, they’re scrambling to whitewash the facts and gaslight the public. But the damage is done. The receipts are out there, and no amount of spin can cover up the fact that Van Hollen turned a violent criminal into a political martyr.

Van Hollen wants to pretend this is all about "due process." That’s cute. But Abrego Garcia went through the legal system—that’s precisely how we know he's a charming fellow with an extensive rap sheet. This whole debacle has been a masterclass in how easily clueless politicians swan dive into public relations traps. And this one? An elite-level trap set by Trump's team. As soon as Van Hollen and his Democrat pals announced their little trip to visit Abrego Garcia, the Trump administration waited until they were safely on the ground in El Salvador to drop a mountain of Justice Department documents detailing exactly who this guy is.

Now, in a stunning display of tone-deafness, Van Hollen is trying to spike the football because Abrego Garcia is being brought back to the United States.

“For months the Trump Administration flouted the Supreme Court and our Constitution. Today, they appear to have finally relented to our demands for compliance with court orders and with the due process rights afforded to everyone in the United States,” Van Hollen said in a statement. “As I have repeatedly said, this is not about the man, it’s about his constitutional rights— and the rights of all.”

This, of course, is a lie. There is ample, overflowing evidence of Democrats falling all over themselves to defend Abrego Garcia the man, pathetically trying to paint him as an innocent “Maryland man” or a harmless “Maryland father,” and not a gang member.

Now Abrego Garcia has been sent back to the United States to face human trafficking charges. You’d think the left, who claim their defense of Abrego Garcia was all about due process, would see this as a win for justice. Instead, they’re pouting, accusing Trump of just making up charges against him. Apparently, for the Democrats, “due process” only counts when it leads to the outcome they want: illegal immigrants staying in this country.
