After the California gubernatorial debate, Republican Steve Hilton jumped in the polls to within five points of Democrat Xavier Becerra. We have to ask ourselves: Just how often do Democrat voters actually pay attention to what their politicians say and believe? And would many Democrat voters continue to vote that way if they did pay more attention?

For instance, most Democrats support voter ID and some even favor deportations. Those Dems who do support voter ID and deportations seem to think that the Democrat Party supports these policies, which would make any moderately informed American laugh loudly. Perhaps what happened with the California gubernatorial debate is that Californians (not just Republicans but Democrats and independents) finally had a chance to hear Becerra try to defend his policies, and realized this guy is a bozo who wants more of the catastrophes already ruining California. No wonder Becerra reportedly pulled out of the Los Angeles Times debate this week. He's a walking, talking ad for the opposition.

In August 2025, Pew Research Center found that 83% of Americans supported voter ID, including 71% of Democrats. In February of this year, CNN polling found that 76% of black Americans support voter ID, though about 80% of black voters in 2024 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, who opposes the Save America Act and voter ID. All but one House Democrat voted against the Save America Act in February.

In June, a Harvard University/Harris poll found that 71% of Democrats support deporting criminal migrants, a jump of eight points from April. Yet this year, Democrat politicians have constantly smeared immigration enforcement and defended illegal alien criminals. Searchlight Institute, which hates Donald Trump's border crackdown and supports Democrats going in the midterm election, admitted in September that Democrats' radical open-borders policies are not resonating with most voters. Yet the institute also found if it used deceptive language, it could trick voters into expressing more support for lefty immigration policies.

I know a priest who considers himself pro-life but always votes Democrat, and his comments about politicians always seem to indicate an incredible ignorance of what both parties stand for. During the last election, multiple young people with whom I went to college seemed quite surprised when I told them that Kamala Harris had openly avowed her intention of allowing no religious exemptions for Catholics or other religious groups and hospitals wishing not to provide abortion care. One of my far-left relatives has so convinced herself that dangerous vaccines like the COVID-19 jabs are essential to saving lives that she is obsessed with repeating the most ridiculous lies about HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. I could provide many more examples of people I know who seem to have no idea what their favorite or least favorite politicians actually believe.

If Republicans would be better at messaging and outreach to traditionally lefty voting blocs like black and Hispanic Americans, we could help many Democrat voters realize that their politicians do not represent them.
