Yesterday was the centenary of the late, great British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s birth. And Thatcher’s critique of “left-wing zealots” applies all too accurately to Letitia James — among many other leftists.
Thatcher, who was famous for her witty and pithy observations, once stated, “Left-wing zealots have often been prepared to ride roughshod over due process and basic considerations of fairness when they think they can get away with it. For them the ends always seems to justify the means. That is precisely how their predecessors came to create the gulag.” Unfortunately, that’s as true today as it was in 1980 or 1940.
New York Attorney General James ran for office on promises of weaponized lawfare, particularly against Donald Trump. Now that she’s facing charges of mortgage fraud regarding a home where her criminal grandniece hid from law enforcement, James is outraged. When she said, “no one is above the law,” what she really meant was that the law was whatever she and her Democrat cronies said it was, so that any of her opponents could be arrested while she could get away scot-free.
Of course, unfortunately, for too long, criminals with titles such as president, vice president, congressman, governor, and attorney general could practically guarantee that they would not be held accountable for their crimes because America had begun to function like an oligarchy. Hence, when one of these elites, like James Comey or Letitia James, is brought to court, they are as stunned as or more stunned than anyone else. Democrats particularly operate on the arrogant assumption that they are above the law. How dare the peasants hold them to the standards which they imposed on others!!

The problem is that the Republican Party is often terrified of looking non-partisan and biased, even though it never seems to influence the Democrats to follow their example, and it never will. But as Thatcher also sagely observed, “If you just set out to be liked, you will be prepared to compromise on anything at any time and would achieve nothing.” Why should Tish James have a get-out-of-jail-free card?
The fact that James not only allegedly committed mortgage fraud but also let a criminal “fugitive” charged with child abuse and grand larceny move into the house while James lobbied for a loan, which prevented her from renting, just highlights how certain James was that she would never be held accountable. Like Joe Biden, Ilhan Omar, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Anthony Fauci, and any other Democrat who engages in shady activities, she was certain the law was only for other people.
The indictment of Letitia James is not simply about bringing justice to bear in her particular case. It is also about ensuring that criminals and would-be criminals cannot turn our country’s courts into a two-tiered system of justice where certain people are never held accountable because of their political status and party affiliation. The Founders fought a revolution to prevent that from happening. And as Thatcher warned us, the same left-wing zealots who ride roughshod over the laws always end, if they are unchecked, with setting up gulags.
