Heroic Dad Leads Revolt to Pull Kids Out of School Mandating Trans Access to Opposite-Sex Bathrooms

North Manchester, Ind., a tiny conservative town that resides in a county that voted 72% for Donald Trump, is embroiled in the cultural battle of their lives. In December, parents of students at North Manchester Elementary found out that the school was allowing a biological boy to use the girls’ bathroom without notifying parents or passing any policy that was debated in a public meeting. As a result, multiple families pulled their children out of the school at the urging of Nate Gephart, a father turned activist who had finally had enough. The superintendent, Dr. Teresa Gremaux, claims that federal law under Title IX is forcing the school to allow a tiny minority of gender-confused children to invade the privacy of everyone else.

“Transgender students must be allowed to use the restroom and locker room that corresponds with their gender identity,” Gremaux said in a statement. “Manchester Community Schools accommodates any student who is uncomfortable with such practices by providing an alternate facility to use.”

This is simply nonsense. Federal law does not require any such thing. Here’s what Title IX says.

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Sex refers to biological sex, not perceived gender. Students asked to use the bathroom that corresponds with their biological sex are not being discriminated against, but are, in fact, being treated equally with other members of their sex. Title IX has nothing to do with gender identity. To claim that it does is a lie. Further, integrating boys on girls’ sports teams defeats the purpose of Title IX, which mandated that girls sports be given equal resources so girls had opportunities to play— something that’s now being destroyed by biological boys taking over girls’ sports!

The Department of Education recently dismissed the notion that Title IX requires forced co-ed spaces. Liz Hill, DOE spokesperson, said, “Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, not gender identity.” As a result, the DOE has dismissed lawsuits claiming that transgendered students have a right to sex-segregated spaces of their choice. Hill continued, “In the case of bathrooms, however, long-standing regulations provide that separating facilities on the basis of sex is not a form of discrimination prohibited by Title IX.”

Anyone claiming that keeping bathrooms separated by sex is discrimination is lying to you. The parents of the Manchester School District revolted against this misinformation campaign. PJ Media reached out to Gephart, who pulled four of his children out of the school and has begun homeschooling them in response to the school board’s lawless actions. “We had enough of the garbage,” he said. “It was toxic.” Gephart didn’t stop with his own children, but is leading a movement to remove 100 students from the school and cause a painful financial blow to the school’s federal funding.

“I’d say the ones that I know about, probably 12 to 15 [kids pulled out] right now and a couple of families are on the fence but that could jump into the twenties very shortly,” he said. “We are having a meeting soon…we have a lot of momentum here in this town.” Gephart started a website called ProtectingOurChildren.net, where videos of contentious board meetings are posted and you can watch the parents revolt and walk out, disgusted, after listening to an “expert” tell them that doctors “assign sex” at birth and are often wrong.

“We were shut down last week and now we have to sit through this trash lecturing us, stupid parents, that we don’t know what male and female is?” said Gephart to a crowd of angry parents who walked out of the Manchester board meeting. “If you care about your kids, if you care about your children…pull them out of the public school system. This is trash, it is toxic, it is ungodly and it should not be taught in our public school system.”

Gephart is not going to go away quietly and he’s in it for the long haul. “If we say this is a horrible policy and we leave our kids in the school, aren’t we being hypocrites? There’s no substance to our words.” This may be the best strategy to fight against school boards intent on ignoring the concerns of parents while pushing through radical far-left policy. Schools depend on the federal funds tied to each student. Schools receive just under $10,000 per student in federal and state funding. If parents got serious and unenrolled their children from these institutions, they would be forced to either close or obey the wishes of the parents who pay the bills.

“What we want here in North Manchester is to protect our kids and keep our kids safe,” said Gephart. “[The] bottom line is the schools left us. They’re out in left field and we need to shake them. We need to wake our schools up. If we had 100 students withdrawn that would be a million-dollar budget shortfall. That would be a shockwave to this school. It’s very unfortunate and sad but the school system has made their decision. They’ve alienated 99.9% of the student body.”

Gephart wants to protect the transgendered students too. “Do we really feel that if a girl identifies as a boy that she should be going into boys bathroom or locker room? I don’t think it’s safe for any student. This is about the privacy and the safety rights of every single student in the school.”

Correction: The original version of this article stated that federal funding per child in Indiana ran to $10,000. State and federal funding combined nearly reach that level per student. The article has been updated to reflect this.
