Campaigns don't go dark in October by accident. When a Democrat candidate whom his party thinks has a shot at flipping a Senate seat vanishes in the homestretch, and his team goes silent, it’s a big deal. Something big is going on no matter how much you try to spin it. The Talarico campaign had every opportunity to get ahead of this story, and it blew each one.

Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D-50th District), the Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate, appears to have checked himself into and subsequently left an Ohio mental health facility, according to audio independent journalist Nick Sortor released Sunday.

Talarico is now essentially the Thomas Eagleton of 2026. Look up the reference if you don’t know it.

The campaign handled none of this well. Talarico went two weeks without an in-person campaign event in Texas, with the general election less than a month away. His campaign blamed the flu, an excuse that didn't hold up under scrutiny. Meanwhile, the campaign said nothing about where he was and even posted videos of old rallies, passing them off as current.

By this past weekend, rumors that Talarico had checked himself into a mental institution had been brewing for days, with several people reporting that their sources told them the same thing.

"I'm hearing that he checked himself into a mental institution, that he had a full-blown mental breakdown sometime around, I guess, September 29th or September 30th," GOP strategist Caroline Wren said last week, citing her Texas sources. She later posted flight tracker screenshots on X.

Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt heard it too. "My sources are telling me Talarico is in a mental health facility," he wrote on X. "His campaign has stopped actively planning events in the vital homestretch of the campaign."

On Sunday morning, Sortor and Rhein Amacher gave Talarico until 1 p.m. ET to account for his absence and vowed to publish the details themselves if he kept quiet. The deadline passed, so they dropped the audio. In it, Amacher asks a woman who answered the phone at the Lindner Center of Hope about James Talarico.

"It looks like he was just discharged this evening. That's why I don't have it," the employee says after a long pause. She then confirmed that Amacher had reached the Lindner Center of Hope in Mason, Ohio.

"During my recorded call, an individual identifying themselves as a female facility employee reportedly stated that Talarico was no longer a patient and had been discharged within the previous 24–48 hours," Amacher wrote on X.

The problem for the Talarico campaign now is that it's on the defensive. Spokesman JT Ennis responded to the audio with an angry denial.

That's cute. If Talarico was really at home this whole time, his campaign could easily prove it, and certainly would have during the two-week absence.

It didn’t, and they’ve provided no evidence since.

You could call two weeks of silence a major blunder for a campaign so close to an election. In reality, the silence was an admission that something really bad was going on behind the scenes. Spencer Pratt, in a lengthy post on X, explained just how carefully campaigns manage image and perception.

"If you think going radio silent and getting TORCHED online for over a week in the closing month of a $400M campaign is bad...just imagine how bad the real story was," Pratt wrote. "Sometimes...there is no good way of spinning it, so you just have to eat your s**t sandwich, and hope that the alternative would've been worse."

Left-wing influencers are panicking and trashing the audio, as expected. But remember, this is the same party that tried to cover up Joe Biden's cognitive decline in the White House for years. Would it also cover up Talarico checking himself into a mental institution? You bet.

If Talarico had really been recovering from the flu at home for two weeks, we would have seen proof during that time. We didn’t. Now it has a huge mess to clean up.
