Newsom Isn't Leading His State; He's Running for President

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) isn’t just thumbing his nose at federal law; he’s practically daring Border Czar Tom Homan and President Donald Trump to arrest him. In the middle of a full-blown crisis, with violent anti-ICE mobs attacking law enforcement and torching parts of Los Angeles for a third straight day, Newsom isn’t calling for calm or order. He’s digging in, siding with illegal immigrants and radical protestors over the safety of American citizens. He’s completely ignoring the chaos, destruction, and criminal behavior playing out on the streets.

The question is, why? And the answer is obvious.

Newsom is exploiting this lawless uprising to position himself as the anti-Trump hero of the far left. He’s not interested in protecting Californians; he’s auditioning for 2028.

During a heated exchange on MSNBC, Homan issued a blunt warning to public officials who obstruct federal immigration enforcement. Host Jacob Soboroff asked directly, “Are you saying that about Mayor Bass and Gov. Newsom? Are they at risk of being arrested?”

“That’s it,” Homan replied. “I’ll say it about anybody. You cross that line, it’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job.”

When pressed further on whether he believes Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is doing that, Homan clarified, “You know, well, if she crossed that line, we’ll ask the DOJ to prosecute. Do I think she’s crossed the line? I don’t think she’s crossed the line yet.”

“The warning we’re sending is we’re not going to tolerate people attacking our officers,” he added. “You violate the law, you’re gonna be prosecuted.”

Later, even though Homan never actually said he was going to arrest Newsom, the governor decided to play tough guy and dared Homan to arrest him.

Get your hands off these poor people,” he said in an interview with Soboroff. “They're just trying to get — live their lives, man. Trying to live their lives, paying their taxes, been here 10 years. The fear, the horror. Who the hell is this guy? Come after me, arrest me. Let's just get it over with, tough guy.”

“You know, I don't give a damn, but I care about my community. I care about this community,” he claimed without evidence. “The hell are they doing? These guys need to grow up. They need to stop, and we need to push back. And I'm sorry to be so clear, but, uh, that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So Tom, arrest me. Let's go.”

Newsom probably does deserve to be arrested for aiding and abetting lawlessness. But let’s not pretend that he isn’t counting on it. An arrest would hand him exactly what he craves: a made-for-TV martyr moment that the media would eat up, instantly elevating him to the front of the 2028 Democratic presidential field.

He wants the photo op, the headlines, the political capital. Don’t give them to him. Enforce the law, absolutely, but don’t play into his stunt. Newsom isn’t trying to protect immigrants — he’s trying to launch a campaign, and chaos is his launchpad.
