Curious Apologists Emerge to Eulogize the Late Dick Cheney

The 2024 campaign was replete with high drama and unprecedented moments — not least of which being not one but two nearly successful assassination attempts on one of the major candidates.

But, for me, the most emblematic moment of the 2024 election cycle was the on-stage appearance of none other than Liz Cheney — daughter of the former arch-nemesis of polite liberal society, Dick Cheney — alongside the Karamel-uh entity, not only endorsing her in the strongest terms possible but actively campaigning for her.

As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this. And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.

To my mind, this unholy marriage epitomized The Swamp; the battle lines had never been clearer between the unique MAGA blend of populism/conservativism/libertarianism and… whatever ideology The Swamp could be said to champion — techno-feudalism, perhaps.

As expected, GOP establishment relics — the likes of George W. Bush — were quick to gloss the recently departed Dick Cheney. “Laura and I will remember Dick Cheney for the decent, honorable man that he was,” Bush said in a statement. “History will remember him as among the finest public servants of his generation — a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence and seriousness of purpose to every position he held.”

Less expected, though, if not entirely surprising, was the Democrat brass’s universal praise for the dead.

None other than the Brandon entity itself — or, more accurately, one of its staffers, or perhaps Dr. (not a real doctor) Jill — released a glowing summary of Dick Cheney’s “public service”:

Guided by a strong set of conservative values, Dick Cheney devoted his life to public service — from representing Wyoming in Congress, to serving as Secretary of Defense, and later as Vice President of the United States. While we didn’t agree on much, he believed, as I do, that family is the beginning, middle, and end. Jill and I send our love to his wife Lynne, their daughters Liz and Mary, and all of their grandchildren.

And the Karamel-uh entity’s eerily similar statement:

I am saddened to learn of the passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney. Vice President Cheney was a devoted public servant, from the halls of Congress to many positions of leadership in multiple presidential administrations. His passing marks the loss of a figure who, with a strong sense of dedication, gave so much of his life to the country he loved.

Comparable effusive gratitude for all of Dick Cheney’s “lifetime of public service” poured in from every major Democrat leader; I won’t bore you with their banal platitudes, but they’re all more or less the same cookie-cutter statements as the above.

And, the king-daddy of over-the-top eulogies came from none other than the Newspaper of Record™, guardian of the neoliberal ruling class, titled “For Dick Cheney, a Journey From Champion of War to Voice of Resistance.”

Via The New York Times (emphasis added):

When he left office in 2009 as the most influential vice president in history, Mr. Cheney was to many the embodiment of an unpopular and bloody war. By the time he died on Monday night, he had become an unlikely voice of resistance to what he saw as a different kind of threat to America, allied not just with those who had soured on him… but even with others who used to call him a war criminal.

It led to the head-spinning moment in 2022 when Mr. Cheney joined his daughter on the floor of the House as the only Republicans there to mark the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Democrats who once considered Mr. Cheney the chief villain of Washington rushed up to greet him warmly. Representative Nancy Pelosi, the speaker who used to joust with Mr. Cheney, held his hand as she spoke with him. And it led to his statement last fall that he would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris over Mr. Trump…

He saw his opposition to Mr. Trump as consistent with a lifetime of defending the nation. To the former vice president, Mr. Trump was the antithesis of a true conservative, willing to burn down the constitutional house for his own self-aggrandizement and accumulation of power…

His statements and his appearance on the House floor prompted some Democrats to broaden their views of Mr. Cheney. “He put country above party and I think that was something I certainly respected,” Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, one of the Democrats who greeted him on the floor, said on Tuesday. “You saw a dad standing up for both principle and for family. You saw him in a different light.”

Of course, all of this praise boils down to two simple facts: a.) Dick Cheney was a lifelong member of permanent Washington, and b.) as explicated by the above title, he morphed in later years into a fierce critic of Donald Trump. Such is all it takes to earn their unending gratitude.
