BIPOC enrollment at Harvard drops post-affirmative action ruling

Since Harvard was made to nix its most egregious and blatant DEI admissions practices by the Supreme Court, the percentage of black student enrollment fell by 4% in the incoming freshman class relative to the year prior.

Via The Crimson (emphasis added):

The number of Black students enrolled in Harvard’s Class of 2028 dropped by 4 percentage points compared with a year ago, offering the first indication of how the Supreme Court’s ruling against the College’s race-conscious admissions practices may transform the makeup of the student body.

The data released by the College on Wednesday revealed moderate, but notable changes in the demographic composition of the Class of 2028. The share of Black students declined to 14 percent from 18 percent*. The proportion of Hispanic students in the Class of 2028 increased by 2 percentage points to 16 percent from 14 percent in the Class of 2027, while the proportion of students who identified as Asian American remained fixed at 37 percent.

*Blacks, being 13% of the population, are still overrepresented among the Harvard freshman class, despite their empirically dramatically poorer academic performance. Yet somehow, the fall from 18% to 14% is framed as some kind of modern-day lynching — “deeply distressing,” per the characterization of The Coalition for a Diverse Harvard.

The horrors of meritocracy!

Toppled Confederate statue reinstated

One of the many cultural casualties of the BLM Cultural Revolution, in 2020, rampaging race mobs hopped up on grievance tore down a statue honoring Confederate general Albert Pike that had stood in Judiciary Square in the nation’s capital for over a century.

Trump’s National Park Service has resurrected it.

Via NPR.org (emphasis added):

A statue of the Confederate general Albert Pike that was pulled down and set ablaze in Washington, D.C. in June 2020 during the Black Lives Matter movement has been renovated and reinstalled in Judiciary Square. The reinstallation on Saturday was a follow-through of an earlier National Park Service announcement that the federal government intended to restore the statue, which it says had been damaged in "riots."…

In an unsigned statement sent to NPR on Monday**, the National Park Service wrote: "The National Park Service announced… it will restore and reinstall the bronze statue of Albert Pike, which was damaged and vandalized during the Black Lives Matter riots in June 2020. The restoration aligns with federal responsibilities under historic-preservation law and recent executive orders to beautify the nation's capital and restore pre-existing statues."

**Having served in the Bureau of Land Management with distinction in a past life, a role in which I interacted with the National Park Service routinely, I can all but guarantee this initiative came from the higher echelons of the administration rather than the NPS bureaucracy, which undoubtedly pushed back. One piece of evidence to this effect is the unsigned letter from the agency announcing the restoration.

Sydney Sweeney rebuffs pressure from pop culture ditz to genuflect to Social Justice™ outrage machine

Some irrelevant hack from GQ magazine, Katherine Stoeffel — who litters gratuitous “likes” throughout her speech in the weird Valley Girl aesthetic wherein statements that aren’t questions end in upward inflections — pressed Sydney Sweeney on her allegedly “white supremacist” jeans ad, encouraging her to self-flagellate and grovel as celebrities scared for their careers often do.

She didn’t take the bait.

This is actually the most effective response by a largely non-political celebrity embroiled in a faux culture war scandal I’ve ever seen: “When I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”

BOOM!

What more needs to be said?

No apology, no backtracking, no off-the-rails reactionary backlash that would just stir up new drama; Sweeney demonstrates the possibility of simply refusing to play their weird, sadomasochistic games.
