The data underlying the famous “hockey stick” global warming graph has finally been found after having earlier been misplaced by leading climate researchers. The newly recovered data confirms the accuracy of the abrupt upward turn in readings characteristic of the “hockey stick” shape found in many global warming projections.
Up until now, however, the data on which the controversial graph had been based was presumed to be lost, so it was not known exactly which aspects of global warming the chart illustrated. Now that the data has been recovered, scientists can state with complete certainty that this updated chart accurately chronicles the past and future trajectory of the global warming crisis.

Don’t let that warmest 2009 and warmest January talk go unchallenged. The fact is the Northern Hemisphere which has far more land area, population and measuring stations was significantly cooler than the norm and did undergo a very cold winter. The warmest talk derives almost entirely from Southern Hemisphere temps. The problem is the Southern Hemisphere has a fraction of the weather stations than the North. So temperatures are extrapolated thousands of miles away from stations. And the stations are almost always in urban heat zones. For example stations in Rio and Brasilia are used to determine temperatures in the Amazon basin. That is ridiculous. Stations in the Antarctic peninsula are used to extrapolate temps in the interior. That is simply wrong. They are entirely different climate zones, with the interior significantly colder than the peninsula. The temps are then homogenized to insure a warming trend. In fact both Australia and New Zealand have been found to have altered the raw data to such an extent that released temperature studies are nothing but pure extrapolates and guesses with absolutely no raw data.

I read an interesting theory about the soon-to-be-forgotten AGW craze that attempted to address the question of how this particular impending catastrophe of global consequence came to capture the world’s attention and its timing relative to other events. The bottomline was pretty thought provoking:

There is one mistake on this graph. The red line should continue to the right far into the future just a tick above the x axis. What makes you think the wild-eyed group is ever going to get a clue. When everyone else is chuckling and reminiscing over that ridiculous global warming scare, the wild-eyed group will still be true believers. Their absolute numbers will have fallen but, as a group, they’ll still be there.
Plus, having the red line continue to the right unchanged would make the chart much funnier.

To Paul from Hamburg: Actually it’s clear from *your* previous posts that you’re the one badly confused about “falsifiable hypothesis” — that doesn’t exactly apply to all this random, out of context factoids and utterly confused rubbish coming from the right that supposedly amounts to legitimate alternative hypotheses that somehow demonstrate that current scientific consensus on how the current round of global warming is caused by human activity is just one possible explanation for the available evidence.
“Current round” is italicized because one thing that the right *loves* to do, intentionally or not, is pull things completely out of context. In terms of global warming, they look at a chart like this and then try to use that to show global warming and cooling are just plain old natural cycles, or they take something pretty random, like the email hack at East Anglia, and grossly distort what it means.
As far as your “question” goes: What specific data would prove that global warming is not happening? Just to review, scientific data involves actual numbers; simply saying “more cooling than we’ve had for the past ten years” doesn’t count, it is nonsensical — *all* of the data collected so far in reference to the this particular and anomalous round of global warming that started approximately <a href="http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/sst/papers/SEA.temps08.pdf"<around 1880 has been strengthening the consensus, and as far falsifiability goes, however you want to test things, you still end up with human activity as being the only real explanation that fits.
Another point my scientist friend (who admittedly is more into things that might leap out of a test tube) and I discussed is how so many people will say goofy stuff like “Don’t those so called scientists know that water vapor is the biggest factor in global warming!?” as if this was some inconvenient fact that climate researchers chose to ignore. But this is no more a variation of the old “what if” teenage notion that maybe you can make something go faster than the speed of light by traveling in a space ship at just below the speed of light and firing a missile from it. No — there is a lot, *LOT* more to it than that. The same is with climate science and what’s really going on with temperature trends and the reasons for them.

I’ve been reviewing my old notes on global cooling (from the climatology course I had back in 1984 when we were still convinced that the ice ages were just around the corner and stocking up on down parkas, snow shoes, and ammunition for our Mammoth guns). Actually, those folks were on more solid ground insofar as their calculations were based on observed patterns rather than guesstimates (i.e. “models”). Even so, there was a bit of AGW (at that time called “carbon-dioxide induced super-interglacial) which some (well, actually, at that time ONE scientist) suggested would delay the next glacial cycle by about 2,000 years, so that Detroit would be under 5 miles of ice in 24,000 AD, rather than 22,000 AD. With that in mind, for the sake of Detroit, and as a conspicuous act of charity for Lion’s fans, perhaps we’d do well to curb CO2 levels to hasten the ice sheets.

1. Global warming would be a good thing if it happened. Little corn would be grown in Iowa under a mile of ice.
2. Oil and natural gas keep being found. There is no incentive to look for more than 20 years or so of oil, and still the oil reserves we know at current pumping rates go into the hundreds of years. As our extraction technologies improve, our ability to get more oil out of current fields will increase.
3. With proper investment, we won’t need oil in 50 years, being able to use nuclear fusion for vast amounts of power. That should work for us until we have nanostats that permit us to control our weather AND protect the earth from astroids.
4. National debt is about equal to one year’s income. That is manageable. The important question is what are we buying with that debt. The other question is what promises has the government made that they won’t be able to keep? Social Security, Medicare come to mind as LIBERAL government promises that can’t be kept. Liars.
Can we please cease with the use of “consensus” when discussing science. Science is not a popularity contest. Throughout history, scientist such as Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Einstein Hubble went against the consesnsus of their day. We revere them today not because they had a consensus on their side, but because they had science on their side.
Whether asking “why?” or “why not?”, skepticism is one of the hallmarks of the progression of science throughout history. When I hear some try to shout down debate due to consensus and not the facts, then I consider them to be anti-science. To debate science is to debate the data and the conclusions based on such, not to count the number of adherants.
Now, there may be some statistical modeling that could be used to determine the parameters whereby a certain statistical basis for certitude may apply, but you may have to talk to some of those pollsters like Frank Lutz to poll scientist. Even then you have a chance of being completely wrong as new evidence is always being obtained that may make today’s conclusions irrelevant, much as they have in the past.
