Charlie Mann, 20, shocked residents in a leafy suburb when he attacked his mother before wounding himself so badly he needed his penis reattached.
Mann admitted causing grievous bodily harm on January 19 for the attack at a home in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court.
The student and his mother, who sustained life-threatening injuries, were taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, for emergency treatment after the December 29, 2013, stabbing.
Mann has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on February 23.
Medics were able to reattach Mann’s severed penis.
