[WATCH] Jon Stewart NAILS IT on Media's 'Breakup' With Trump

Jon Stewart made a surprise appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Monday night, and his relationship advice to the media was spot on. Some Americans might not have noticed, but mainstream media outlets have been absolutely obsessed with Donald Trump for the last two years. Stewart suggested they snap out of it.

“Hey media, so I heard Donald Trump broke up with you,” Stewart joked. “Stings a little, doesn’t it? Finally thought you’d met your match, a blabber-mouth who’s as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are.”

“It is time for you to get your groove back, media,” the comic continued. “Let’s face facts, you kind of let yourself go a little bit for these past few years. Put on a few pundits, obsessing 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week about this one guy: ‘What’s Donnie up to? Did he say anything about us? You think he’s gonna come on our show? You think he even likes us? He doesn’t even have to come on, he can just call us. Oh, Donnie, please just let us know you’re okay…'”

Stewart mocked the media, comparing them to a desperate girl trying to change her bad boyfriend. “No, that’s just primaries Donald, that’s just election Donald. You’ll see — we can change him! He’ll get presidential!”

Why didn’t that work out? “Because 70-year-old men don’t get less cranky or racist as time goes by — unless they are visited at night by three spirits.”

Stewart’s best advice was what the media should do next. “This breakup with Donald Trump has given you, the media, an amazing opportunity for self-reflection and improvement,” the comic said. “Instead of thinking about whether Trump is unAmerican or if he thinks you’re the enemy or if he’s being mean to you, or if he’s going to let you go back into the briefings, do something for yourself.”

Here comes the kicker: “Self-improvement. Take up a hobby. I recommend journalism.”

Now, there’s something the Right and the Left can both get behind. The mainstream media has indeed been complaining a great deal about how Trump treats them — and he hasn’t been especially courteous. But Stewart is right to mock this passive aggressive complaining. The media has more important things to do than complain if Trump isn’t calling on them.

President Trump has indeed gone too far in branding entire outlets like CNN as “fake news.” But Americans are tired of the mainstream media’s constant complaints — that’s one of the reasons they elected Trump in November. Both Trump and the media have been unfair to one another, but the media’s responses have also given Trump more exposure, which is what makes this breakup theme so perfect.
