You Know Who Never Shows Up in an Obama Campaign Email? Law-Abiding Citizens, Who Have Defended Themselves with Firearms

Just before his State of the Union address, President Obama’s personal political army fired off an email from an illegal alien. Today, it’s firing off this email from someone who is advocating for more gun control and for “universal background checks” on firearm purchases.

Friend —

My dad, Reuven Rahamim, was killed this past September in a mass shooting.

I was 17 years old, one of 15 children who lost a parent that day.

I’m honoring his memory — and those of many others who have fallen — by doing something about gun violence.

Whether you’ve been personally affected by gun violence or not, you need to be part of this fight, too. Share your story: Why are you in this?

Since my dad’s death, I’ve learned that my family’s experience is not as uncommon as one might expect.

The statistics are horrifying: 12,000 Americans are murdered with guns every year. But the true toll of gun violence is borne by the tens of thousands of sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, and wounded survivors left behind.

When I think of the number of lives that could have been saved by universal background checks or better access to mental health services, I simply don’t understand why Congress doesn’t act right away.

So join me in speaking out. Our stories from all across the country will reaffirm the all-too-real consequences of this unending violence and the need for sensible solutions. Share why you support legislation to keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands:

I know my dad is watching right now as I fight alongside many other Americans for common-sense legislation.

He deserves a vote. We all deserve a vote.

Now is the time.

Sami’s story is tragic, and it’s being tragically exploited so Obama can push for national gun registration. That’s what truly “universal” background checks will entail, as they will require a background check any time a private citizen sells a single firearm to another private citizen. The government would have to be involved for the sale to be legal, and the government would be in the position of tracking every single firearm in the United States.

We have had background checks for all retail gun purchases for 20 years or so. They usually take mere seconds and work just fine. Such a background check reportedly stopped the Newtown killer from buying firearms. So he did what a nascent criminal will do, and stole guns from someone who had purchased them legally, his mother. How would a “universal” background check have stopped him?

Likewise, the Webster killer was a felon who should have still been in prison for murder. As a convicted felon he was ineligible to purchase a firearm. So he allegedly used his neighbor as a straw purchaser to obtain his weapons. His neighbor claims that he stole the weapon from her. Either way, a “universal” background check would have done nothing to stop him.

In the case of Rahamim’s father, the killer used a semiauto 9 mm Glock pistol. Such pistols are available everywhere.  The killer had been fired recently. He was reportedly mentally ill and had resisted treatment. There’s no reporting on how he obtained his gun, but he had stockpiled more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition. In the current market scarcity, stockpiling that much ammo costs several thousand dollars and takes quite a bit of time. He killed himself after evidently targeting certain workers at the company during his rampage. Like the Newtown killer, his was an act of murder-suicide.

More rigorous mental health checks might have prevented this, but it might not have. Stopping law-abiding citizens from obtaining firearms certainly would not have. Had someone at the targeted company been carrying that day, they might have been able to save a few lives.

The people we never hear from in any of Obama’s missives speeches are the 15-year-old Houston boy who used an AR-15 to defend himself and his sister from home invaders. And the mom who used a pistol to defend herself and her children from home invaders. Or the 87-year-old who fought off criminals with his pistol. Or the young man who stopped a mall shooting in Oregon with his pistol, just by pulling it out and pointing it at the shooter.

These people and thousands more all saved lives with their firearms. Why doesn’t Barack Obama ever acknowledge that these law-abiding heroes exist?
