Lemonade Out of Lemons: LA Riots Quickly Moved the Trump/Musk Feud to the Back Burner

Those of us who write primarily about politics for a living get a sense of dread when we see that one story has taken over the news cycle and looks like it has legs. True, it makes for easy work at first, but as it goes on, it feels like we're trying to get blood out of rocks looking for new angles. When the COVID pandemic took over in 2020, we were left with what seemed like only three variations on a theme for the next 18 months.

We did our jobs, of course, but many lamentations were heard in private conversations. A little bit of liver damage, too.

This week, we have been treated to something that doesn't happen too often: one new dominant news story practically nuked another into oblivion.

It is late Wednesday morning here in the Sonoran Desert as I write this. Just last Friday — a mere five days ago — even people who aren't glued to politics were talking about the very public spat between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. As my friend Matt Vespa wrote over at Townhall, it was a "headache that we don't need." As Matt also shared, we were at least getting some great meme action out of the fight:

That feud was obviously stressful for those of us on the Right who have been fans of what both men have accomplished in the last six months. It also looked like it was going to go on for a while. Two highly successful men with billionaire-sized egos rarely yield ground or cave in.

Enter the Los Angeles riots and the complete disaster that the state of California has become under years of super-majority rule by the Democrats.

Look, I don't want to celebrate violence unless it is happening on a football field or in a boxing ring. However, watching the Trump/Musk fight vanish into the ether was blessed relief. Now that the riots have hijacked several news cycles, we'd almost forgotten about last week's brouhaha. And it's a lot more energizing to bag on Gavin Newsom than to have to write about family infighting.

Perhaps this will make the president and Musk forget about it, too. Rumors of a cooling off are already making the rounds. Maybe being reminded in such a stunning way that the Democrats are psychopaths can bring a little Kumbaya to President Trump and Elon Musk.

That's something I'd be thrilled to write about.
