Democrats Want to Ban the Tampon Tax. Why Stop There?

Democrats in Rhode Island finally found a tax they don’t like. They are on the “tampon tax” bandwagon again, whining about the unfairness of a tax on necessary female hygiene products. The Providence Journal reports:

The Rhode Island House should pass H-7095, sponsored by Rep. Edith Ajello, D-Providence, which exempts feminine hygiene products from the sales tax. These products are a medical necessity, not a “luxury,” and as such, they should be given tax-exempt status like other medical products.

To subject them to the sales tax is gender discrimination, because obviously only women need by these products. Further, it is a regressive tax that hurts the poor, and the amount the state will lose in revenue is a small fraction of its sales tax revenue.

I don’t know about discrimination but it sure is theft! This might be something both sides can agree to. But let’s not stop at feminine hygiene products. Let’s ban all sales tax in all 50 states on every product. Right now you are triple or quadruple taxed. You pay gas tax, sin tax, sales tax, state tax, federal tax, property tax and lots of other hidden taxes within those taxes that you don’t even know about. If you want to get serious about relieving the burden on the poor, then ban all sales tax, period (not just period sales tax).

Imagine the difference it would make in the way people perceive taxes if they were given a tax bill at the end of the year instead of having it siphoned off slowly a couple of dollars at a time. Do you want to see a real revolution? Send each citizen an itemized bill at the end of the year with the total of what the government wants to take from their pockets and what it will be spent on. But that won’t ever happen because the pitchforks and torches would come out and chase every state legislator out of town.

We are being robbed, and it’s not just on sales tax. Property taxes are a nightmare. In Illinois, the legislators are considering raising property taxes so high they will tank the housing market, rendering the residents unable to sell their homes and flee the state and they know it. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago came up with this dastardly plan.

Current homeowners would not be happy about this, but it would be a good result for the Illinois economy. That’s because the new taxes wouldn’t affect people thinking of moving to Illinois. While they would have to pay higher property taxes, that would be offset by not having to pay as much for their new homes. In addition, current homeowners would not be able to avoid the new tax by selling their homes and moving because home prices should reflect the new tax burden quickly.

Do Democrats ever have any other ideas besides raising taxes? So maybe we should all get behind this abolishment of the “tampon tax” and turn it into a total ban on all sales tax. Do you think the very concerned Democrats who care so much about women would join us?
