Democrats Aren’t Really About Solving Problems

Why don't more people ask "What have Democrats done for me lately?" It's a legitimate question to ask, because Democrats are constantly painting themselves as the champions of the everyman, yet do they actually deliver for the everyman? They think "affordability" is the issue that will propel them back into the majority in November, and I can't help but laugh because when have Democrats ever succeeded in making anything affordable?

It wasn't all that long ago that Democrats forced Obamacare on us, sold as the fix to ultra-high health care costs. What did it do in reality? It made health insurance more expensive. Way more expensive. Prescription drug prices are another key example. They've been bashing Big Pharma and bemoaning high drug prices for years. And who actually delivered on this? President Donald Trump.

As my PJ Media colleague Stephen Green previously reported, prescription drug prices in the United States have fallen to their lowest level in more than 60 years, proving that this was a fixable problem that Democrats repeatedly failed to accomplish despite it supposedly being something that was important to them.

Trump didn't get here by giving speeches about affordability. He got here with his Most Favored Nation policy, which ties what Americans pay for prescriptions to the lower prices that other wealthy countries already pay drugmakers. Since taking office, Trump has pushed Big Pharma to actually cut prices rather than just talk about it, and 17 of the world’s largest drugmakers have agreed to lower their prices as a result. The TrumpRx platform alone has already saved patients $700 million.

Trump wasted no time taking a victory lap. "The headline today says exactly that. It says prescription drug prices record sharpest drop in more than 60 years," Trump told reporters, adding, "And I told you that was going to happen." He kept going. "Just Friday we learned for the first time in 60 years prescription drug prices are falling," Trump said. "Every single politician, everybody here who has ever worked for them, said they were going to do it. Trump and the Republicans finally did it. There is a story to tell and there is a bright line contrast to be had in this election. It's not good enough just to call them socialists. You have to say what you've done and you have to say what the impact of their policies would be. And I think we've got enough candidate quality and talent to do that."

"Democrats spent years promising to lower drug prices and never got it done," NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella said in a statement. "Republicans did it in less than two years. Prescription drug prices just posted their biggest drop in 60 years, and voters will know exactly who delivered and who stood in the way."

So, what have Democrats done for you lately?

Nothing.

But why? Isn’t the answer obvious? Democrats aren't interested in solving problems. They're interested in exploiting them. They find a grievance, invent a villain to pin it on, and ride the outrage all the way to Election Day. Their solutions, when they bother to offer any, either accomplish nothing or make the underlying problem worse, just like Obamacare did to health insurance costs.

That's the endless cycle. Manufacture the crisis, blame the other side, promise a fix that never comes, and repeat. All this actually accomplishes is keeping the base engaged and the donations flowing, all with the goal of keeping Democrats in power without ever having to deliver anything real.

Trump and the GOP just proved there's a difference between talking about a problem and actually fixing it. Drug prices are falling for the first time in six decades because Republicans did the work Democrats spent years just talking about.
