Democrats Are Trying To Have It Both Ways on Platner. It Won't Work.

The Graham Platner problem for the Democrats is impossible to ignore. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen Democrats shamelessly avoid endorsing him or even blaming President Donald Trump for why they have to support him. It’s quite clear they realize that being linked to Platner is a problem, especially when who knows what else is going to come out about him… and we know something big is coming. And through it all, Democrats are stuck with a problematic candidate they can’t exactly rally behind, but they’re constantly being put on the spot for it. So, what do they do?

Their latest trick is a real doozy: blame the voters.

Yep, Democrats in Washington are washing their hands of Platner, absolving themselves of responsibility for him because, hey, “We didn’t pick him, voters did.”

It’s a sad, pathetic cop out.

Now, you can understand why they’re doing it. Platner has a record that would end most political careers before they even got started: allegations of domestic abuse, Nazi sympathies, racism, misogyny, homophobia, and a porta-potty fetish to boot. The kind of history that, under normal circumstances, would have the left calling for someone's head before the story even finished loading on their screens. But Platner is a Democrat. So instead of condemnation, we get deflection.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on Meet the Press Sunday and had a golden opportunity to say whether Platner has the character to serve in the United States Senate. He passed. When host Kristen Welker pressed him directly on the question, Jeffries tried to distract with a joke about the New York Knicks winning the NBA championship.

But, Welker wasn’t about to let him get away without answering the question. And Jeffries eventually got around to saying something.

Though "something" is generous.

"The voters of Maine are ultimately going to be the ones to decide what's in the best interest of the people of Maine," he said. "At this period of time, I'm just focused on making sure we take back control of the House of Representatives."

Translation: not my problem.

Welker pressed harder, noting that Maine's election laws still give Democrats enough time to replace Platner on the ballot and asking directly whether they should do so. Jeffries punted again. "Well, the voters of Maine elevated him in the primary, and ultimately, senators are going to have to make that collective decision, I assume in terms of what happens," he said. "And again, I think, I have a responsibility — We have a hard enough job pushing back against Donald Trump's extremism and the sycophantic behavior of my Republican colleagues in the House. We need to focus on that job, and we need to make sure we're doing everything possible to win back control of the United States House of Representatives in November."

The "voters chose him" line is a convenient shield, and Democrats know exactly what they're doing with it. The problem with that line is that Maine primary voters are the Democrat Party. Their choices reflect the values of Washington Democrats because they are the ones who choose the party’s nominees. Right now, those values say a man accused of Nazi sympathies and domestic abuse is who they want fighting for them in Washington.

Think about what the reaction would look like if the roles were reversed. A Republican Senate candidate with the same record would trigger wall-to-wall coverage before lunch. Every cable news anchor, every Democrat in Congress, and every social media influencer would be demanding answers around the clock. There would be protests. There would be emergency press conferences. The whole party would face calls to account.

But when it's their candidate? Well, voters chose him, so let’s just move on.

Yes, Maine Democrats made their choice, but the national party is making theirs too by not condemning Platner, going quiet, and hoping the story fades before November. That silence is its own answer, and it tells you everything you need to know about how seriously Democrats take the character question when winning is on the line.
