Why I Trust Trump on Iran

The voices on the left insisting that Donald Trump is bringing us closer to war with Iran are getting louder, but I think they’re underestimating Trump, as usual. Trump has made it clear he has no interest in getting us engaged in another war, and I believe him. And it appears to me that his actions in recent days have been with that goal in mind, and I trust he’s on the right path.

Why do I trust Donald Trump on Iran? Unlike his predecessors, Trump understands the stakes, the history, and — most importantly — the consequences of getting it wrong. Trump has given Iran a two-week ultimatum to come back to the negotiating table on its nuclear program. This isn’t some empty threat or reckless saber-rattling. It’s a calculated move designed to avoid the disastrous mistakes of the past, particularly the catastrophe that was Libya.

The Libya situation was a huge disaster that was completely avoidable. Hillary Clinton, then Barack Obama’s Secretary of State, orchestrated the takedown of Muammar Gaddafi through a NATO bombing campaign. The result? Gaddafi was gone, but the aftermath was pure chaos—a power vacuum that turned Libya into a playground for terrorists and warlords. The so-called “smart power” approach left the region in ruins and made the world less safe. Trump knows this history, and he’s determined not to let Iran become “another Libya.”

Trump’s approach is refreshingly pragmatic. He’s not interested in endless wars or regime change for its own sake. Instead, he’s giving Iran a clear choice: Negotiate in good faith or face the consequences. And those consequences aren’t about toppling the regime and letting the chips fall where they may.

And the public seems to agree.

A pair of new polls shows strong public support for President Trump’s handling of the Iran-Israel conflict, signaling that voters remain confident in their 2024 choice, even during wartime. An Insider Advantage poll conducted by the Trafalgar Group found that 74.4% of Americans back Trump taking “all necessary” steps to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Of course, Trump isn’t looking to repeat the mistakes of Libya, where a prolonged bombing campaign led to regime change and utter chaos. He’s made it clear, both publicly and privately, that he’s “worried about Iran becoming like Libya.” That’s not just talk. It’s a sign of a leader who understands that military action, when necessary, must be decisive and limited in scope. The goal isn’t to create another failed state in the Middle East; it’s to prevent Iran from ever getting its hands on nuclear weapons.

Contrast this with the feckless approach of the Obama-Biden years, where weakness and indecision emboldened America’s enemies. Obama’s Iran deal was a gift to the mullahs, giving them a pathway to nuclear weapons and billions in sanctions relief. Trump, on the other hand, withdrew from that disastrous agreement and reimposed crippling sanctions. He’s shown time and again that he’s willing to use America’s strength to keep our enemies in check, but he does so with an eye toward stability, not chaos.

That’s why I trust Trump on Iran. He’s not driven by ideology or naïve hopes that dictators can be appeased. He’s guided by hard-earned lessons from history, a clear-eyed understanding of America’s interests, and a willingness to act when necessary, but only in ways that serve America and avoid the disasters of the past. That’s real leadership. And in a world as dangerous as this one, it’s exactly what we need.
