Fort Wayne Church Plays AC/DC's 'Money Talks' During Worship Service

The latest negative example of combining the sacred with the profane during a worship service is sadly provided by  The Pointe Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After a prayer thanking God for the opportunity to hear from His Word, followed by a request for God to speak to any non-Christians attending the service, the praise band launched into a cover of AC/DC’s “Money Talks.”

For those unfamiliar with the song or unable to understand the lyrics in the video above, here are the first and second verses along with the chorus of “Money Talks” –

Tailored suits, chauffeured cars
Fine hotels and big cigars
Up for grabs, up for a price
Where the red hot girls keep on dancing through the night
The claim is on you
The sights are on me
So what do you do
That’s guaranteed
Hey little girl, you want it all
The furs, the diamonds, the painting on the wall

You hustle, you deal, you steal from us all

For the record, the church band did change the most offensive lyrics — “red hot girls keep on dancing through the night” and “Hey little girl, you want it all.” However, even with those *probably unauthorized* edits, the song is offensive in and of itself.

AC/DC’s “Money Talks” is an ode to greedy debauchery. It revels in the worst of our self-centered, materialistic society that idolizes pleasure. In the song, the trappings of riches are glorified; the singer asks to be loved for his money. With the song, AC/DC is flaunting our society’s rebellion against God. It goes without saying, but “Money Talks” has absolutely nothing to do with the Creator of the Universe. Furthermore, and this also should go without saying, “Money Talks” has no place in a worship service to the Almighty and Holy God.

Sadly, The Pointe Church’s prayer for God to save sinners was followed up with a song celebrating sin and sinners. The desire for relevancy is an idol that has caused many churches to take their eyes off of Jesus.

God commands His people to keep His day holy. That means worship of the Lord is to be set apart from sin. Throughout the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, God defines right worship of Himself as obedience. A famous example of this is found in 1 Samuel 15.

After King Saul defeated the Amalekites, he offered an improper sacrifice to God. The prophet Samuel rebuked him with the well-known words, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 25:22).

By playing “Money Talks” as part of their worship service, The Pointe Church demonstrates that they believe they get to define what right worship looks like.
