Portland Man Says He Was Beaten Outside a Bar for Wearing a MAGA Hat

Two people were arrested early Saturday morning for assaulting a man in a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hat at a bar in Portland, Oregon, Fox 12 reported.

The victim, Luke Lenzner, told FOX 12 that he and his wife were on a date night at Growler’s Taproom when they were attacked by a group of people triggered by his MAGA hat. Lenzner suffered cuts and bruises to his face.

“I got mobbed by everybody that was in that bar outside. People came from the inside out — just circled me and my wife,” said Lenzner.

Security camera footage shows that the couple made their way into the nearly empty bar, but bar staff reportedly told the couple that they were done serving and were closing for the night.

That’s apparently when a group of patrons outside turned violent. According to police, 22-year-old Leopold A. Hauser and 23-year-old Adebisi A. Okuneye assaulted Lenzner and his wife when they went back outside.

“Surrounding me, like literally surrounding me, pushing me. I’m just trying to get through, trying to stop the person from hitting me, from taking my hat, and then I get sucker-punched,” Lenzner told FOX 12.

Hauser and Okuneye took off before police arrived at around 12:50 a.m., but Lenzner had written down the license plate number of their car to give to the police.

Portland police arrested the suspects a few blocks away and they were booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of third-degree assault. The pair were arraigned Monday.

Witnesses, including the bartender, told police that Lenzner started the fracas. In security footage, he can be seen pointing to his hat and saying something as he left, and witnesses say “that’s what started it all.”

Apparently, in some parts of Portland, pointing to a MAGA hat justifies an assault.

Lenzner reportedly donned the hat at his wife’s behest.

A probable cause affidavit states Lenzner’s wife told him to wear the “Make America Great Again” hat throughout the night “so she can see how people treat him.” She said they walked to multiple bars in Portland, according to court documents.

Okuneye said Lenzner came out of the bar, used an expletive and said, “B****, do you like my hat,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

Fox 12 reported that “Hauser stated that he disagreed with the political statement of the hat and his group was ‘mean mugging’ Lenzner, when Lenzner asked if they liked the hat.” It’s possible that Fox 12 got that wrong and the assailant was accusing Lenzner of doing the “mean mugging.”

According to the Urban Dictionary, “mean mugging” means: “To glare at another person with a scowl, or other antagonistic facial expression, with malicious intent, hoping to provoke a response from the intended recipient.”

It would make sense for the assailants to accuse Lenzner of “mean mugging” for pointing to his hat since they contend that he started the altercation.

According to a witness quoted in court documents, Lenzner took a “fighting stance,” but police said that “Lenzner never involved himself physically in the altercation.”

PJ Media reached out to Lenzner for comment and will update if he responds.
