Video: 'Justice has been done'

President Obama addressed the nation tonight, with the news that terrorist Osama bin Laden has been killed in Pakistan. Here is the video of his remarks.

The president says bin Laden was killed in a firefight in Pakistan today (not last week, as many reports indicated), and our forces recovered his body at that point. The US forces suffered no casualties in the firefight.

All politics aside, this is a moment we all remember, the moment we learned that the man who plotted and murdered nearly 3,000 innocent people in New York city on September 11, 2001, is now dead. His death doesn’t end the war. We have never been fighting a man, but a vicious totalitarian ideology, and that war unfortunately goes on. But bin Laden’s end does serve as reminder that if you attack the United States of America, we will hunt you down regardless of the ideologies of whoever happens to be in the White House. Presidents Bush and Obama could not be more different in their politics, yet both directed the military to hunt bin Laden. And justice has finally been done.

This is indeed a great and historic day for America. The crowds chanting “USA! USA! USA!” outside the White House tonight have captured the moment as well as it can possibly be captured.

Update: President Bush’s reaction:

“This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001.”

He also said the U.S. “has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done. “

Indeed.
