NIH (again) yanks Diversity™ grants

Why were the initial cuts to the NIH DEI grants rescinded in the first place and what responsible party at NIH needs to get DOGEd next?

It just goes to show that getting full control over these rogue agencies is, in all likelihood, a months-long or even multi-year project.

After previously backtracking, the National Institutes of Health has once again withdrawn applications to a high-profile predoctoral grant program that were submitted with a diversity notation, effectively blocking many early-career academics from underrepresented backgrounds from being funded...

This is the second time the NIH has withdrawn applications for the F31 diversity fellowship, which is designed to “promote diversity in health-related research.” In early February, The Chronicle reported that scholars’ applications had been removed from their scheduled reviews, or study sections, without being reassigned. Days later, that decision was apparently reversed, with F31 diversity applications being restored to their original study sections. Now, though, two F31 diversity applicants told The Chronicle, their work is back in limbo: Late last week, they said, they received an automated notice from an online portal that they’d once again been withdrawn from their study section.

I looked into the NIH F31 Diversity Award. The description is as stupid as the title.

The purpose of the NIH F31 is to enable promising predoctoral students with potential to develop into productive, independent research scientists to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research. The NIH F31 Diversity Award seeks to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral or clinical research workforce.

What a very pompous, long-winded way of saying “more blacks and browns in white coats, please.”

University of Washington DEI boss lavished public cash and other perks on acolytes, newly released records show

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's chief diversity officer made a series of poor financial decisions, including approving substantial salary increases and authorizing excessive travel spending, according to newly released records that shed light on the employee's demotion earlier this year.

The decisions by LaVar Charleston throughout 2023 and 2024 coincided with a period of intense scrutiny by state Republican lawmakers over the value of campus diversity offices. In one of the most brazen examples cited in the report, Charleston approved bonuses for 85% of his employees just three days after UW leaders struck a sweeping budget deal with legislative leaders that had stalled for months over DEI.

The race hustlers can cry until the cows come home behind their diverse human shields, but anyone looking at the incentive structure can see that these people are most consternated about the drag on their personal finances caused by their grift being exposed and shut down. George Floyd overdosing on the street was the single greatest thing that ever happened to their careers.  

Why isn’t LaVar Charleston currently under indictment for racketeering or public corruption or fiduciary malfeasance, or any of a dozen potential charges?

As long as the Department of Education must exist, at least it’s being put to some good use here.

The Education Department announced Friday it is investigating more than 50 colleges and universities over what it called “racial preferences” in academics or scholarships, a move that comes amid the Trump administration’s wider crackdown on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.

The department said 45 schools are under investigation for partnering with The PhD Project, which it says is “an organization that purports to provide doctoral students with insights into obtaining a Ph.D. and networking opportunities, but limits eligibility based on the race of participants*.” 

Seven more schools are under investigation for “alleged impermissible race-based scholarships and race-based segregation.””

*This is the correct way to counter the diversity propaganda that the right hasn’t always done well, often for fear of being branded racist (although the attack has lost its sting with time): none of the DEI social engineering is inclusionary of minorities; it’s exclusionary of whites and whatever other ethnicity they decide to lump in with whites, like over-performing Asians.
