Q.U.I.T.'s protest against the "Out in Israel" film festival
One of the most bizarre groups in California’s political galaxy goes by the name of Q.U.I.T. — Queers Undermining Israeli Terror — also known sometimes simply as Queers for Palestine.
QUIT tags along and makes regular appearances at the various omnibus anti-war and anti-Israel rallies around the Bay Area; they almost never organize protests on their own. But yesterday, April 8, was one of those rare days in which there was a protest organized by and exclusively attended by QUIT.
The focus of their anger this time around was the “Out in Israel” film festival at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater, which is “a special showcase of new, recent and classic films from Israel exploring lesbian and gay life, imagery and stories.” The film festival is itself part of the larger overall Out in Israel LGBT Culture Festival, which celebrates all things gay in Israel.
Now, one would think that there would be nothing controversial in the slightest about a pro-gay festival in San Francisco. So I was mystified as to what exactly QUIT — itself purportedly a gay rights group — could possibly find so offensive about a pro-gay-rights festival as to merit a full-blown street protest. Out of curiosity, I decided to check it out, and to sincerely try to comprehend and present to the public their point of view.
QUIT did not go unopposed. Local pro-Israel groups San Francisco Voice for Israel (SFV4I) and Stand With Us got wind of the QUIT protest and quickly put together a counter-protest to bring a dose of sanity to the proceedings.

Now, I’ve written about QUIT before, pointing out their suicidal cognitive dissonance in supporting a society (Palestine) in which homosexuality is absolutely forbidden, generally under penalty of death. What I wrote back then (nearly five years ago) remains true; this paragraph bears repeating:
“In fact, the cognitive dissonance of Queers for Palestine — marching in support of those who would kill you if they were given the opportunity — only serves to illuminate the cognitive dissonance of the entire “anti-war movement.” Because the goal of the “War on Terror” is to protect the liberal, free, egalitarian democratic society that we all cherish from the forces of oppression, totalitarianism and religious fundamentalism. Yet the anti-war crowd strives to compel the very soldiers who are defending them to lay down their arms, as if the battle would suddenly cease if one army were to stop fighting. So the anti-war crowd must ignore the evidence that one side is fighting to impose the harshest form of religious conservatism not just on their own countries but on the entire world given half a chance, whereas the other side (our side) is fighting to preserve a progressive civilization. That’s right, folks — this war’s for you.”
The same principle applies to the Israel/Palestine conflict, which is a microcosm of the wider Islam-vs.-the-West “Clash of Civilizations.”
The narrow sidewalk in front of the Roxie was completely blocked with QUIT protesters and SFV4I counter-protesters.
I checked QUIT’s Web site to see if they had anything about this event, but the site is updated so infrequently I found no mention of it. Even so, at the protest itself I was lucky enough to nab a copy of QUIT’s manifesto explaining their rationale behind the protest. Our vocabulary word for the day is “pinkwashing,” QUIT’s clever twist on the notion of “greenwashing,” which itself is of course a twist on “whitewashing.” “Greenwashing” describes the PR campaigns of corporations which try to cover up their environment-unfriendly policies with a veneer of supposedly “green” initiatives. “Pinkwashing” apparently means to use the PR-boosting power of being gay-friendly to cover up one’s other flaws. (Unfortunately for QUIT, the term “pinkwashing” has already been reserved by breast-cancer awareness groups to refer to companies that abuse the “pink ribbon” cancer awareness logo to boost sales.)
QUIT is accusing Israel of “pinkwashing” its treatment of Palestinians by promoting how gay-friendly the nation is while sweeping under the rug its “apartheid policies” toward Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza. I invite you to read QUIT’s manifesto above and try to wrap your mind around their point of view — which may not be an easy task. Note how QUIT in no way disputes the fact that Israel is queer-friendly; nor do they dispute the fact that gays in Palestine generally face immediate execution (by mob violence, government dictate, or even at the hands of their own families) if ever found out. Mostly, QUIT conveniently fails to mention what happens to gays in Palestine, but to the extent that they do mention it, they lay the blame on Israel. QUIT’s “logic” goes like this: Israel has the Palestinians trapped like rats in a cage, and it is this desperate social condition which causes Palestinian society to become so twisted that it oppresses its own people; furthermore, by closing the borders, Israel prevents gay Palestinians from fleeing the horrors of Palestine for the freedom of . . . Israel.

It’s about a contest as to who is the most politically correct. THey have a list of things/people/groups/countries which must be bashed, and the task at hand is to simply take the list and draw superficial rational links between the items so as to have the pretense of a sensible and morally superior position.
It does not survive a millisecond’s examination by any rational person, including much of the left itself. They must be laughing in their meetings at the idiots on their own fringe.
But they are USEFUL idiots. The meme is echoed publicly, which is the primary purpose. Well, if this is a joke, it’s a sick one, indeed. But these gay folk are, well, stupid’s the word, to claim that Israel practices “apartheid.”
How so? Well, about one fifth of Israel’s population is Arab, with full rights. Yet the West Bank and Gaza must be totally judenrein, free of any Jews. Why shouldn’t a Jew be able to live peacefully in a Palestinian Arab state?
The answer is obvious: Palestinian Arabs, and their enablers in other Arab countries, are grossly intolerant of Jews. Also of Christians, and, sadly for these QUIT morons, gays. Especially gays.
Look, gay folk need all the friends they can get. Israel, and the West, generally, is as good as its going to get in the world. The Arabs will string them up, merely for being who they are.
This is just more proof that the Liberal Left has sailed off the far rim of reality. It’s sort of amusing to watch now, but one must wonder what will happen this November? After all, the Left came unhinged when Gore lost in 2000, then collectively soiled their underwear in 2004. It was the late Sam Kinison,(God rest his peculiar soul), who enlightened me.
He was performing in a show in Seattle in the late 1980′s when I happened to be in that town, and the local band of committed sodomites and buggery fans decided that this was a protest-worthy event.
One of Seattle’s local news outlets interviewed Kinison and asked him about the protests.

I have been to SF a few times as well and the gays who have a positive opinion of Israel outnumber QUIT. Most gays in SF know what radical Islam would do to them.
I am gay myself and feel completely at home in Israel.
It’s okay to heap abuse on QUIT, but your apparent general scorn for gays is more Islamic than what I find to be the case with either Israelis or pro-Israeli Americans, straight or gay.
Otherwise, QUIT members seem to be afflicted with some sort of mental disorder. They are too conflicted not to be.
Israel, Tel Aviv in particular, is one of the only safe havens for gays in the entire middle east.

Gays are a very morally confused group of people to begin with. Why would the logical dissonance of this group Q.U.I.T. surprise anyone? For gays, it’s more important to undermine and destroy the institution of marriage in the U.S. than to save their pink brothers from the gallows in Muslim lands. Thus, Bush was the enemy not bin Laden. Just like they perfer orgamism over life (HIV/AIDS) they disdain a country that tolerates their sodomy for countries that would kill them for it. Folks, do not waist your time trying to make sense of groups like Q.U.I.T. Just keep them out of our schools.
I suppose that on an individual level, there is just as wide of a spectrum running from probity to turpitude among homoerotics as among the rest of the population, but I am inclined to agree with you regarding their confusions. Not a small number of them seem also to harbor death-wishes, engaging in unprotected anal copulation. (I wouldn’t call it “sex,” strictly speaking.) But that some of them would champion a regime that advocates the wholesale execution of all of them over one that more than tolerates their ethical aberrations does seem to strain credulity.

Perhaps what this group is saying is that you don’t get to point to one accomplishment of Israeli society (apparent acceptance of gay people) in order to vitiate real, troubling human rights abuses. Our community is indeed not for sale, and we don’t appreciate being patronized and used as poster children for other causes, especially those that attempt to justify the oppression of other marginalized communities. Civilized nations cannot simply buy absolution from one egregious wrong by righting another, distinct wrong.
The author fails to list a single instance of “mob violence” in which a gay person was killed for being gay, or cite any law in Palestine that mandates a death penalty for gay people. As recently as 2002 gay people were arrested in the US in their own homes for engaging in private, consensual conduct. Nor does QUIT support such policies, fictitious though they may be. QUIT also does not believe that Israel should cease accepting gay people until it also accepts Palestinians.
A full quarter of gay youth in the US find themselves homeless at some point as a result of their families’ rejection of their sexuality, and several of my friends share stories of being beaten by parents for their sexuality. I count myself among the youth who have experienced this. All people deserve the benefits of basic human dignity, however, and their failure to accord this to me can’t justify a failure on my part to accord it to them. Is the author really suggesting, through wholly unsubstantiated claims, that we are somehow more civilized than Palestinians? I can recall nothing but warmth, hospitality, and genuine human decency from both Arabs and Jews during my visits to that part of the world.
The fact is that the entire “Islam against the West” and “War on Terror” is manufactured by American conservatives and the pro-apartheid camp to undermine attempts at resisting corporatism and focusing on real, sustainable change in our “progressive” society. Islamic society and European society have been in contact for ages, and they have had important mutual influences on each other. To be sure, there are important differences between them and more than a little friction. Most of this friction, however, is from frustration with a recent history of Western colonialism and economic imperialism that frustrates their ability to direct their own destinies. Hence the rise and spread of religious fundamentalism in that part of the world. Where anger, frustration, and hopelessness converge, they find their way into the ideology and permeate the zeitgeist. The cure is to behave in genuinely humane ways toward each other, even if this means taking the risk of being the first to lay down arms. Muhammad, Jesus, and Moses alike would expect no less.

1) There are millions of children around the world that are abused by their parents on a daily basis so it’s not something that happens only to gay kids.
2) You blame the west for the fact that Muslims are killing innocent people so let me ask you – why is it than that Jews don’t kill innocent Germans now, following the abuse they took from them? How comes Native Americans don’t kill innocent Americans following the abuse they took? etc.
3) There is no such thing as Apartheid in Israel. Israeli Arabs have every and each right that the Jews in the country have. Do they like each other? some do some don’t. Israeli Arabs live under better circumstances and have higher life expectancy than Arabs in any Muslim country in the world.
I strongly suggest that you stop blaming the wrong people for your and and the “Palestinian’s” problems.

As a transgender woman in San Francisco, let me say that QUIT does not speak for all, or even a majority of the LGBT community. Any attempt to intelligently discuss Muslim treatment of LGBTS is immediately shouted down and compared to dehumanization of Jews during the Holocaust. In fact, saying anything that criticizes, even indirectly, Muslims or illegal immigrants inevitably leads to comments about the opponent wearing “jackboots,” favoring concentration camps for the group, etc.
Most people just avoid the discussion completely, as witnessed by the meager turnout for pro-Palestinian protests here in SF.
The incessant use of Holocaust rhetoric in this context is disturbing for several reasons: (1) it trivializes the actual Holocaust. (2) It ignores the fact that LGBTS were also victims. (3) Numerous members of my family fought for this country against the Axis powers; some died or came back with life-long problems.
You know something, Robert, I don’t particularly care about “gays,” but I do believe that every person is morally bestowed with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (as these notions were understood in 1780). And I’ll tell you something else: that particular understanding is far more ratified in Israel than in any Muslim country.
I’ll be honest with you: homosexuality is, in my view, an ugly thing. Nevertheless, I don’t believe that homosexuals should be summarily killed because of their perversions; and I can find nothing in the American Constitution that mandates that they should. The nation of Israel seems also to be tolerant. The regimes in Islamic countries, operating under shari’a law, not so. Under those regimes, homosexuals are not merely to be criticized, not merely to be subject of disapprobation; they are to be killed.

Delia, There has been, for decades, a signboard that can be read heading northbound on I-5, just south of Chehalis, WA, where a conservative farmer posts his views. I’ll never forget a message posted to that board in the mid-to- late 70′s that read, “HOMOS ARE QUEER NOT GAY”. Pretty much sums it up, then and now. Don’t expect logic from those incapable of it.

Look for the signboard as you approach Chehalis from the south on I-5. It’s on the east side of the freeway and features a caricuture of Uncle Sam. There is always some sort of politically-based, conservative message.

Q.U.I.T. is not really about Israel but about America. It has internalised the rhetoric of to be ‘Left’ one must oppose Israel to the point that it forgets the groups stated purpose.

And while I’m at it, Israel’s treatment of gays does not vitiate anything. It simply tolerates gays. You imply that Israel tolerates gays only as a tactic serving a more sinister purpose. In fact, Israel tolerates gays because it is a tolerant western society. And since you don’t seem to understand that simple “fact,” i suspect you don’t understand very much.

I realize it was nearly nine years ago, but you do remember that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were actually, concretely, deadly-ly attacked, right? Reasonable, honorable people can disagree over whether the Iraq invasion and the Patriot Act (among other things) were necessary or were handled well, but the statement that the War on Terror is “manufactured” is bonkers. And as for “corporatism,” dude, you do realize, don’t you, that it’s in lefty/social-democratic/controlled economies that government officials have *closer* ties to their cronies who run the big manufacturing and service concerns, right?

Has anyone considered the possibility that this is some sort of masochistic homosexual group, not that there’s anything wrong with that? perhaps the fact that homosexuals are subject to torture in islamic societies is some sort of a fantasy turn on?
the worst thing that ever happened to 97% of queers (the rest about 3% were born as homosexuals and or the “wrong” gender) is for psychiatry to have caved in. once this was removed from the manuals as a disturbance, a tsunami of very underdeveloped, narcissistic and mommy fixated boys declared themselves as part of this gang. the fact is, this group’s political ideas are as naive as the 13 year olds they were when their brains stopped developing, in a bad way.

I wonder what you’d be like if you were so often subjected to ridicule? I am almost 60 years old now and I had to deal with a lot of stress when I started coming out in the early ’70s. You have no idea of what that was like, do you?
I went through my entire adolescence suppressing who I was rather than growing and learning as my heterosexual friends and peers were freely able to do. Couldn’t talk about relationships. Didn’t have any.

Let’s see. In Israel, there is no such thing as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Gays and Lesbians are permitted to serve openly in the Israeli Army. In Israel, same-sex marriages performed elsewhere are recognized by the State (this is not true for most US States) and common-law same-sex marriage is already in effect giving most of the rights of marriage to gay couples. Israel has one of the highest percentages in the world of support (from its population) for allowing same-sex marriage. Israel (along with Jordan, Turkey, Cyprus, and now Iraq) is one of the only countries in the Middle East where homosexuality between consenting adults in private is not prohibited by law and where homosexuals are not persecuted by law.
So, in most of the other Middle East states (including the Palestinian controlled areas), homosexuality is punishable by flogging and even hanging. It is definitely illegal in Gaza and there is no legal protection for gays in the West Bank. “Honor” murders of gays are rarely prosecuted.
So the only thing I can infer from the attack on Israel by QUIT is that they are anti-semitic racists who really don’t care one iota about gay rights issues.
