Let It Burn

October 21st, 2013 - 9:56 am

There seems to be some confusion over what I mean by that, so let’s clear things up.

“Let it burn” doesn’t mean running around, arsonist-style, setting fires — I’m looking at you, Senator Cruz. While I approve wholeheartedly of Cruz’s motives, the shutdown was a mistake.

“Let is burn” means having the courage of your convictions. You think ObamaCare is going to fail? Then let it. Don’t get GOP fingerprints anywhere near the thing. Don’t give Democrats excuses, even pretend excuses.

“Let it burn” means being the grownups — the firemen, if you will — with responsible solutions ready when the damnable edifice burns down and all that’s left is the empty hole of collectivism it had hidden.

“Let it burn” means there’s about to be a big mess to clean up, so you want your people to be the ones with clean hands.

“Let it burn” means, most of all, that there’s no fixing the unfixable. There’s certainly no fixing it when your party controls only the House — and half of your party is just as vile-y progressive as the Democrats. Those “Republicans” are already complicit; don’t you be.

your wrong sir. I am so tired of the effing chess match all you pundits want to play. When you are faced with something so wrong as obamacare, you fight it, you dont create dumbace machiavellian overthought strategems, you say stop. stop stop stop. The Republicans should have defaulted. If Obama had the balls to ruin the credit of the US, do it now. there is no tomorrow, except inside the paradigm of obamacare. and that paradigm is not an America I know, or care to know, i would rather live in 1930's depression America than a Soviet 2.0 America.

Cruz's tactic was right, and is paying dividends even now, and will only increase in the months to come.

Could someone explain to me the logic behind blaming Cruz for the shut-down? No, I know the motivations (everybody needs a boogeyman), but how do you square the circle? He is one senator in the minority party of the chamber of congress that was not in any way holding up the CR demanded by Democrats. Yet somehow he was able to hold a majority of votes in the House? Was he elected there to hold some 200 seats?

The Founders made two mistakes in how they framed the Constitution:
1) They expected the States to be far more jealous of their own power than they in fact proved to be. Whether through laziness, or ignorance, or the very human factor that it is easier to blame a distant Washington D.C. then themselves when it came time to raise taxes - in any case, the States yielded their powers in a manner contrary to the entire studied history of power and those who wield it. The Founders overestimated the fierce, clinging to power that was to serve as a counter-balance to the Federal Government.
2) The Founders underestimated the centralizing tendency of power.

But their Founding was otherwise sound. It does not need to be invented again, not in a fundamental sense. Let It Burn - we can re-build it more quickly than it was built the first time around. The current political calculus may die, but the Founding Principles live on.

I still don't see why anybody think there was a smurf's chance in a blue man group that the shutdown would be avoided.

Boehner could have crawled bare-a**ed over broken glass to lick Reid's shoes, and Reid would have just demanded the shoes be buffed by the short-n-curlies. And the Republicans still would've gotten the blame.

The question was never whether there would be a shutdown--the question was what the shutdown would be about. The Democrats wanted it to be about repealing the sequester, but Cruz made it about Obamacare.

Obama always blames his screwups on the people that tried to stop him from screwing up. And while some might want the Republicans to clean up the mess, not all of us trust them with the job.

If burn it must, then let it ALL burn -- including the Statistocratpublican Party.

I don't know. I think there's quite a bit of value to being able to say "We tried everything up to and including shutting down the government to stop this monstrosity." as the edifice starts to crumble in the months before the election.

I agree that we shouldn't try and fix it, and I'm glad the defund effort failed. Cuba has been blaming the US embargo for their policy failures for decades, do we really want to give the Democrats a similarly convenient excuse? But we do need to be positioning ourselves by offering alternatives for cleaning up the mess.

Let. It. Burn.

To me, it also means giving Obama's jackass voters what they wanted.

"I want a rocket ship! I want a unicorn!"

"You do realize that if you get that for Christmas, there won't be anything left for your birthday?"

"I want a different birthday!"

"Okay, kiddo. Enjoy your space-time warp when you have to move back home and get a job flipping burgers."

The MSM would find a way to blame the Republicans anyway: the GOP should shut up about the Obamacare disaster since they have never contributed and none of them voted for it. The GOP would be worse. Bush let the uninsured die. Truth? Who cares?

Propagandists are the best spinners.

More or less what I was going to say.

"It would have worked if only the Imperialist Wreckers had supported it!"

It's not like people (in general, right, left, or middle) actually want to learn from experience or have to admit that you can't just fix everything in the world by waving the Government wand at it.

I am fine with Ted Cruz serving as our John Brown. Change the debate. Pour gasoline on the deadwood of the edifice that needs to burn.

I am fully on board w/ the Let. It. Burn. strategy. The GOP should stay as far away from this looming disaster as they can.

However when you say "“Let it burn” means being the grownups — the firemen", I think of the GOP along the lines of these firemen...
