This photo came across Twitter today, thanks to Jonah Goldberg. It’s from the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Sochi, Russia.

The best thing this could be is an acknowledgement that Communism is a major part of Russia’s history. That’s still bad, of course, unless it’s accompanied with facts about the old USSR’s brutality (not likely). It could also be a hint at where Putin wants to take Russia again.

Update: But wait, there’s more.

Update: And more. Look who’s applauding. (See the following update.)

Update: The third photo is a fake. My apologies.

Hey, it tried to tell a rough story of a rough country with a long and often nasty history, and had a LOT of talented dancers out there, not to mention some old Olympic foes like Kerellen and Tretiak. But what the hell, reduce it all to making your goofy political points. Sure, it was a massive info-merical for Putin's Russia, but a damned impressive "patriotic" spectacle. Now to kick their butts on the slopes and in the rinks.

I agree with you here. Too many , who probably didn´t even watch the show, are trying to scoff and mock and make political points. I watched it live and it was an absolutely splendid show, much better than the one in London 2012. I can also tell you that the American troup had the best outfits and got a marvelous reception, standing ovation, only the Russian troup could top that. It was a success, do not let some bitter politicians and journalists fool you here. I look forward to the downhill races tomorrow !

Those floating red, disembodied, heads were extremely creepy. (A commentator in Canada remarked that this depiction of the Communist era was the "dream era of great hope for the future.")

Putin was the head of the KGB. You have to be a good communist to get in that position. But it's not something you applaud. Unless you agree with it.

Putin was unquestionably a KGB agent but he was never the head of the KGB. He did spend a year as head of the FSB, one of the agencies into which the KGB was split, but that was years after the Soviet Union had been dissolved and Communism was no longer the only legal ideology in the country.

The FSB may not have been dramatically different from the KGB though; I haven't had as much chance to learn about the post-Gorbachev era as I've had to study the Lenin/Stalin era.
