This is just…odd.

Tuesday morning, a peculiar announcement trickled out of the White House press office: President Barack Obama would be holding a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings. At the White House. By himself. No press or other intruders allowed.

Except the White House photographer.

It’s true. Here’s the photo, which the White House released into the wild on Tuesday.

Who turns a moment of silence, which is supposed to be about honoring the fallen and wounded, into a posed solo photo-op? That’s clearly what this is. This photo obviously, almost aggressively, makes the moment about Barack Obama and not the Boston victims.

This is hubris taken to a toxic level. Honestly, it makes my skin crawl a little bit.

I wonder how many takes it took for just the right angle.

As a photographer, I'm impressed with the almost perfect rule-of-thirds composition. As a citizen, I am disgusted.

Just like the picture released after Neil Armstrong's passing: not picture of the heroic astronaut but a picture of the Sun King basking in the Moon's glow.

Clinton pulled one of those back in 1994,when he was walking the beach at Normandy, alledgedly alone (somehow with a camera and sound crew) and stopped to put a pile of rocks into the shape of a cross.

Really, it's all about the visuals for this crowd.
