All they have to do if fill a leaky boat with refugees plus a nuke, and the US State department will town it into LA for them.

The North Koreans have delivery systems. The Chinese gave them missiles. China is mobilizing military assets near the NK border, which is worrisome, partly because it makes the possibility of a mistake increase. Add to this the involvement of the Iranians, and you have a recipe for serious trouble.

Well, I doubt they'll be targetting us, but there are several things they could conceivably do that would be very, very bad for the US if they pull them off. I'd feel much better about this if the chunky monkey in charge over there was a known quantity, but he's really not.

Right! The attack is on! Now all they need is a way to get the nuke to America. Time to hit Expedia.com.

Uhhh . . . don't you need deployable nukes to launch a nuke attack? While it appears that the Norks have finally had a real and also successful nuclear test, there's little reason to believe they have any ready for delivery. Of course, I'm not the Joint Chiefs, so I have the luxury of saying that. They don't and shouldn't.

deployable is not the same as a missile or long range bomber. stick a nuke in the hold of a freighter or cargo ship and blow it in the panama canal or new york harbor. or five miles from the pacific fleet. the list goes on. nukes+threats and we sit around.

There's no such thing as a hold of a cargo ship anymore. Cargo is all containerized (or bulk, which wouldn't work for this). The Norks would have to put the device into a container, get it out of the country, probably to China, then get it onto a container ship going to the destination. The problem is detonating it. Containers are metal, meaning you can't use any kind of radio detonator. A timer would run the risk of weather or mechanical trouble delaying the ship, causing the detonation to occur harmlessly out to sea. You could use a GPS, if you replaced the top of the container with fiberglass and arranged to have it placed on top of the stack.

That said, the effects probably wouldn't be that great. A detonation in the Panama Canal locks or dockside in a port would destroy the equipment and put that facility out of commission for a year or so. One in a harbor would sink a few ships and, depending on yield, take out equipment for a few months. Detonating one five miles from a carrier strike group would just make the lookouts wonder about the bright light.

you ever see a long liner tuna boat? i could put a nuke in that. and you are awfully blase about the tidal wave that a nuke could set off. ten guys with box cutters did what you seem to think a small nuke can't do.

you also seem to think that just because a i can't put up a scenario in a few sentences on a blog that is flawless the scenario doesn't exist.

by your reasoning, the 9/11 attacks didn't amount to much. a couple of buildings. no biggie.

btw, there are cargo ships. most of them are RoRo, but they still are cargo. and tankers. and private yachts. and other delivery modes i haven't gone into.

Thank you for saying that. All they have to be able to do is trash a major harbor or three and we'll be hurting very badly particularly if they're all on the Pacific side. China would certainly approve with all their ambitions in that theatre.

Well, Sadam did have chemical weapons. And he did threaten to use them. Remember what happened then?

RE: Breaking...N.Korea army says . . .

Would it be impolitic to laugh?
Laughing would probably be the definition of 'impolitic'.
Sorry, can't help myself, I laughed.
