Rep. Todd Akin has been slammed by Mitt Romney and two GOP senators have called for him to drop out. On Mike Huckabee’s radio show today, Akin said he was staying in the race.
But according to NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell, the National Republican Senate Campaign has pulled its ads on his behalf. That’s $5 million in air support Akin will not have, while the Democrats will probably buy more ads to help Sen. McCaskill now. Those new buys will include ads that will do nothing more than quote Akin accurately.
Crossroads GPS has also pulled its buys from Missouri’s Senate race. No word on how large the GPS buy was, but it was probably big. McCaskill was viewed, until this past weekend, as a likely GOP pick-up en route to a GOP Senate majority. Now that’s hanging by a thread.
Both the NRSC and GPS can be expected to renew their buys if the GOP gets a new candidate in that race. Akin now has nowhere to go but out.

I understand he has until 5:00 tomorrow to drop out, or the Repubs can’t nominate a replacement.
Dang! Should have checked that before picking a date and time in the pool!
I’d like to take 5:30 PM Thursday, August 23, 2012 in the pool as the date on which he steps aside.
Today and tomorrow he’ll continue to flop and try to figure out how to salvage his career. Denial is not a pretty sight.
Wednesday is probably too soon for this arrogant individual to finally accept his fate even though he knows there’s no hope at that point.
Friday is too close to the weekend and gives the talking heads even more to chew over without a known replacement and further weakening the Republican brand in that race.
The party will likely be doing everything short of setting a fire under his buttocks to get him to leave the race in time this week to have another name on the ticket by the weekend.
This will give the talking heads something more to chew on – his replacement – instead of simply looping over and over his statement that got him into trouble to begin with.
There’s a pool? Why did no one call me?
By the way, hopefully Sen. Cornyn is all over this, knows the details and the time window and will push Akin out.
By the way, Todd Akin is no witch.
I certainly hope so! It would be *best* if he withdraws before 5 PM 08/21, but he can be replaced as late as 09/25 (with a court order, per the other thread on Akin ) if he refuses to step aside.
Under what grounds would a court order be issued – stupidity?
Only way this works is if he agrees to step aside – THEN the state level republicans have some breathing room and can find a replacement to beat McCaskill.
That’s what the statute says, per the other article (Is it too late to replace Akin?):
The deadlines for a withdrawal of candidacy is provided in 115.359, RSMo.
The final day to withdraw WITHOUT a court order is tomorrow, August 21 by 5:00 p.m.
The final day to withdraw WITH a court order is September 25 by 5:00 p.m.
It’ll be interesting to see what grounds they would use, if it comes to that. Hopefully Akin will announce tonight or early tomorrow that he’s stepping aside for the good of his family, so we can put this nightmare as much behind us as the MSM will allow
.
My point is, a court order is a legal document. The only way you have a legal recourse is if the law has been broken somehow.
Stupidity is not illegal.
This idjit won the primary and there is no legal recourse to remove him from the ticket via court order unless he violates the law somehow.
The only hope now is that he can be persuaded or forced or even blackmailed into stepping aside and letting someone else grab the banner and go forward with a better chance of winning.
I see signs Akin dropping out is a done deal, but I’m waiting for confirmation.
Any know for sure?
Oh great! Yet another distraction from the sorry state of our country. Let’s debate abortion 24/7 until this Republic falls.
