Roger L. Simon

In 1979, Christopher Lasch published The Culture of Narcissism warning of the normalizing of pathological narcissism in our society.  Considering events since then, he was evidently on to something.  Now, some 35 years later in the Obama era, with the Bergdahl incident only the latest in a parade of endless scandals, we have arrived at a  full blown era of what has lately been called Moral Narcissism.

Moral Narcissism is an evocative term for the almost schizophrenic divide between intentions and results now common in our culture.  It doesn’t matter how anything turns out as long as your intentions are good.  And, just as importantly, the only determinant of those intentions, the only one who defines them, is you.

In other words, if you propose or do something, it only matters that you feel good or righteous about what you did or are proposing, that it makes you feel better personally.  The results are irrelevant, as are how the actual activity affects others.

Also, although it pretends (especially to the self) to altruism, moral narcissism is in essence passive aggressive, asserting superiority over the ignorant or “selfish” other. It is elitist,  anti-democratic and quote often, consciously or unconsciously, sadistic.

The Obama administration is loaded with moral narcissists, including, obviously, the president himself — Valerie Jarrett, Susan Rice, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton etc.  The media and Hollywood are also clearly stuffed to the gills with moral narcissists.

Obamacare is a perfect example of moral narcissism in action.  Never mind that the public didn’t want it. Never mind it was an atrociously planned bureaucratic mess (in fact that comes with the territory).  It was what Barack Obama wanted — for himself.

Roger,

You have just identified the reason that an Obama even got selected and elected. The simple need by simpletons to "feel good about themselves." The man had no apparent qualifications for such an office, and he has displayed no ability to learn since he has been in office. I think we all know why his college records are sealed, don't we?

I hope this article stands out from the mass in the future, so that the next age of moral revival will know that not all of us were driven by the pathology of total moral narcissism.

Woodstock Jihadists practice a form of amnesiatic reality amendment. It is a form of taqqiya, except they lie to themselves.

When reality does not conform to how they insist it must be, they simply announce that it does and "the science is settled".

This creates the bad parent "because I said so" syndrome as the hippie dippy Weathermen engage in "helicopter nannying" the nation. What you can eat, what you can drink, what you can drive, what you can insure, what you can smoke, when you can have sex, how you can worship, what to think, what to say, with whom you can congregate.

The fumbling, stumbling, bumbling results...often comical, usually disastrous, more than occasionally deadly...are scrubbed clean from the alternative reality of "truthiness".

It may not be true...but it ought to be, dude. What difference does it now make. I will not allow myself to be questioned. The science is settled and you are a denier of my reality. You're harshing my mellow, man...and I want to throw you through a plate glass window.

2 million Cambodians are starved and massacred? Communism is all flower petals and sweet cream. Radical Islam is a religion of peace. No global warming for 17 years, nine months is a denial of my redistributionist planned reality.

Woodstock Reality is an opiate of leftists. The totalitarian bent is a necessity, because anyone living in the real world is bound to attempt to respond to it...and they must be commanded to abandon it for the fake one in Woodstock Nirvana.

Woodstock Jihadists are never wrong because they simply change the reality after the fact. They are not accountable because nobody can hold them accountable who lives outside of their reality.

This is not narcissism. It is psychopathic.

This is a small c communist cult. It is a mass hysterical blindness. It is, by all relevant standards...insane.

And, they rule us. Because we fear all the names they call us when we intrude on their insanity.

THE BERGDAHL EXCHANGE IS A WIN! WIN! WIN!
I think Obama kept Bergdahl in his back pocket. That is, he knew about him and he had his aides discuss prisoner exchanges with Congress, so he could have some deniability about Congress not being informed whenever he needed to play the 'Bergdahl card'. Here's the Three Wins: 1) It got the VA scandal off the front page, possibly all summer; 2) It released the most dangerous prisoners at Gitmo, so now Gitmo will be easier to close; Nothing earth-shattering so far, but the next 'win' has yet to be discussed: 3) Obama was able to leave Afghanistan with a big kiss-off to Karzai. Yes, our Liar-in-Chief is a very spiteful little man. He's had problems with Karzai in the past. Karzai wouldn't meet with him in his recent visit to Afghanistan, so ... let Karzai meet with the five Islamoscum that'll be fighting against him soon enough. And I'll release them so quickly after I leave Afghanistan, Karzai will know I really stuck it to him. And, maybe, I'll even get a Status of Forces agreement in time for the upcoming elections -- since (threat, threat) I can always release all of Gitmo. I don't think Obama thinks in terms of morality: It's only: 'What's good for me'. Narcissism and lying is what got him where he is today. And may he have a great -- and long -- fall.

A narcissistic Presidunce he surely is , But - While his actions may make him feel good , it is the destructive nature of those actions that need be addressed , not the fact that he is not quite right in the head .

The overworked term, 'polar opposites,' finally finds a home.

The quintessential difference between a man striving to do the good and right thing and...

a man whose action is obviously 'good and right' because he's the one doing it.

Why do you let them off the evil hook, Roger? Your argument is that they are good but misguided egotists.

But there intentions are NOT good, in any way. They are evil marxists, in it for world domination, without even a passing care about what their schemes do to another soul. Just because they declare their intentions are good doesn't make it so. There isn't anything good about them.

A narcissism virus is an apt metaphor. Perhaps it is just another face of narcissism but it seems we have also become a nation of drama queens - led by the MSM, Hollywood and bad parenting. Politicians and bureaucrats are always congratulating themselves and making dramatic, easily consumed but empty statements as if they were acting in some sappy movie. When someone dies within the ranks of public safety workers, they hold huge ceremonies where everyone takes the day off and motorcades of officers and workers come from a 500 mile radius to give or listen to speeches, have a good cry and not coincidentally reinforce their claim to lavish pay and benefits. Every single news conference by government or public service officials starts out with a long list of self congratulations and sucking up to the politicians and higher officials who control them. When personal tragedy strikes, family members and neighbors rush to the news team microphones to give "performances". It has infected universities and large corporations. Kids only want to pursue careers that will attract attention to themselves. Is it just me or does it seems like so many more people today pursue drama and self aggrandizement rather than understanding, useful skills and mutually beneficial relationships?

You keep using the word "scandal", I don't think you know what it means. For it to be a scandal, the MSM would have to treat it as such.

Aparently the country loves narcissism. They elected Obama twice for president. Never under estimate the stupidity of the American electorate.

Obama is a Qatar tool. It is obvious for those who can still see. All scandals go back to Qatar... ALL. And the Emir's brother just graduated from West Point this year, where Obama SPOKE ABOUT a retreat in foreign policy.

I would say that so-called 'gun control' is at or near the top of the list of the ridiculous, dangerous manifestations of moral narcissism.

Unfortunately for many nations around the world, they believe it a guarantor of safety despite the mountains of contradictory evidence. Corrupt governments are happy to let that debate rage since they know gun control is people control.

Roger, You came so close to hitting the nail on the head when you mentioned our President, Bargdahl and Islamic taqqiya in the same paragraph.

This article is powerful. It is helping me understand the perplexing paradox of people who do not believe in god and who seem to have no overriding moral code demonstrating such powerful self righteousness on so many issues.

The article also introduced me by link to Hans Kudnani. Wow!
