Happy Unbirthday, America
“A Very Merry Unbirthday.” We all remember the lyrics from Alice in Wonderland: “A very merry unbirthday/To me/To who?/To me/ Oh, you.” Etcetera. They were written by Robert B. Sherman of the Sherman Brothers who wrote so many of the great Disney hits, including that most super positive of all super uppers, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
But one thing that it isn’t very “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” this Fourth of July is our country. It’s her birthday — but not a happy one. Maybe we should, in Robert B. Sherman’s other words, call it an “unbirthday.”
But whatever we call our situation, the causes of our malaise are all too apparent — a depressed economy, out-of-control government spending with the largest deficits since World War II, an intractable ecological disaster with no plan how to end it, a continuing global war against an enemy we dare not even name, a mad theocracy on the verge of nuclear weapons, and so on.
Worst of all, however, may be the growing cancer inside our own house. Difficult as our problems may be, they can be resolved democratically in a society under the rule of law. But we have reason to believe that these days, that most basic of all our legal principles, that keystone of our system, one which was fought for by generations of Americans, equality before the law, is under attack at the center of our government.
That is why the most important story that PJ Media has covered since its inception in 2005 may be the emergence of whistleblower J. Christian Adams from the Department of Justice. Adams was an attorney in the voting rights division who resigned when the Department forbid him to testify on the New Black Panther case before the US Commission on Civil Rights. The Department had dismissed that case before sentencing, even though they had won it. According to Adams, the DOJ has a dreadful record when pursuing examples of black on white racism. Only racism towards people of color is countenanced.
As CEO of PJ Media, I am proud to have published Adams and will continue to do so. I am also a former sixties civil rights worker and what we were fighting for at the time was true racial equality, not an unbalanced system in which aggrieved interest groups, whatever their historical justification, can threaten and bully people of other races. I can’t say what Dr. King would think today (unlike others, I am not psychic) but I would like to think he would oppose racism from all quarters and toward all races. In fact, I am almost certain he would.
I also know Adams’s story is important because it has been met by stone cold silence from the mainstream media. And not just from the usual suspects – the triumvirate of reified liberalism, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post — but even from the Wall Street Journal. The supposedly center-right WSJ has thus far ignored the story of the Justice Department attorney. Shame on the Journal and kudos to Fox News’ Megyn Kelly for having the courage to bring this forth.
Well, on Tuesday, Adams — no longer a government employee — will finally get to testify in front of the commission. And I have it on good authority that he will name names — the names of those in authority who let the Panthers off free after the case had been won: Loretta King and Steve Rosenbaum. I have no idea if he will officially name their boss the attorney general, but as the old saying goes, “The fish rots from the top down.” Indeed, I am told that Holder was “aware of the outlines of the case.”
Holder should read the works of a dead white European male, Alexis de Tocqueville, who understood that no society can survive the use of ascription to make decisions that should be based on law. Characterizing Holder as a reactionary says it all. His mindset is similar to that of France on the eve of revolution, different laws for different classes. As a black man, Holder learned nothing from the black experience with Jim Crow. Ascription is not a mechanism to achieve justice. It is a mechanism that produces an intolerable tyranny that ultimately collapses in the face of mobilized opposition, whether through revolution as in France or civil disobedience as with the Civil Rights Movement. He has created an ugly precedent, and I fear it will result in even uglier consequences.

The great risk to the United States at this moment is the possible neutering of the last two channels of freedom: freedom of expression and free elections.

Which seems the “appropriate” response to the “Democratic” Party, hierarchy and troops since the 1960s appearance of the STARS of the Show: Kennedys onto political center stage. Trained by the patriarch to respect the Law AS HE HAD, trained by the patriarch to respect the moral teachings of his Catholic Religion AS HE HAD.The first Kennedy with a glamourous wife and two lovely children. And now the NEW KENNEDY, with a glamourous wife and two lovely children. Both Kennedys trained in Harvard and Chicago (the most notoriously corrupt political machine for at least 3/4 of a century). Both “elected” via that politics by the “voters” of the USA. Who would rain on that parade?
I have no wish to defend him but at least the first Kennedy was an American patriot. This “Kennedy” is not. He behaves like a closet Muslim. This Kennedy does not believe in the rule of law. His refusal to enforce border security is the best example. He refers to illegal aliens as undocumented workers and he attacks Arizona when it modestly tries to address the issue of illegal immigration into that state.
Obama told us he had no respect for the rule of law when he turned off the AVS during the election campaign so that he could collect illegal donations by credit card. Chris Adams and Gerald Walpin are poster boys for his lack of respect for the rule of law.

Yes, his personal life included a number of sins, but he did have America’s best interest at heart- even gave us supply side tax cuts before Laffer popularized supply side economics. He had the guts to stand up to the Russians. Overall, Kennedy was a good leader and a good President, but one with many things to answer for, but that’s between him and God.
And, until we get Tweedle Dees and Tweedle Dums out of power, this will continue. We have a National Political League made up of the Dem Confernce and the Repub Conference and they Face Off every 2, 4 or 6 years and Play for the Super Bowl. And, we, The People, are not considered a part of the equation any longer. We are just the fans who turn out to vote.
And, whoever wins the Super Bowl, as soon as they are seated again, they Do Nothing For We, The People. They just play a game on TV for Public Consumption, and then when the Cameras are off, they, of both parties or conferences, just laugh at We, The People, becuase they have duped us one more time.
Obama already has a Snake Oil Czar, and in fact, has a Snake Oil Empire. That Empire is the Mainstream Media in all it’s forms, and the Czars are everybody from Chris Matthews to Bill O’Reilly. Wake Up America, we are all being sold a bill of goods by the MSM and the Politicians they Speak For, and there is little or no difference in the Spin You Get From Any Of Them. They show just enough difference as to make us think We Are Getting Fair and Balanced Accounts of what the Stooges In DC are doing. They are Actors. And, they are not Acting In Our Best Interests.

The National Political League does not want Any Challengers who might Upset the Balance of Power (The Charade that goes on in Congress). They want Absolute Power to be held by the National Political League. No new teams or leagues allowed.
And, of course the MSM is on the Side generally of the Democrat League of the NPL while the Republican League of the NPL has a Middle of the Road, Fence-Straddling Network called Fox News that does their bidding and do some trash talk about the Democrat League, but in fact, Makes Sure that the Charade of the National Political League with it’s Tow Members, the Democrat Conference and The Republican Conference, never being truly challenged. They are not going to allow anybody to Upset This Balance of Power that these Two Conferences Have.

You are the first person I’ve noticed that has mentioned the effect of this decision on young blacks (and whites). Obviously, the equality under the law aspect is primary, but for those who value empathy, this is an element that must be discussed. Obama can visit as many elementary schools as he wants and he can preach about the joys of reading and the value of education. What the kids are seeing is that thuggery works, be it the NBPP variety or that of ACORN. I was going to say I felt sorry for these kids, but that’s not it–I am angry that thugs are depriving them of a chance to learn the satisfaction of real accomplishment.
The standards are wrong. Not everyone must go to college, especially not right out of high school. There are lots of people who need a bit of time in the real adult world to figure out what they can do and what brings satisfaction. They should be told that it is never too late to learn and pursue a goal, and that there are plenty of opportunities to do so in community colleges, etc. The division of people into winners and losers must stop. I prefer a nation of growers. We have enough examples of Ivy elites who haven’t had an original thought in their whole lives, who are stuck on the “wisdom” received at 18. We should never again have a president who calls American citizens he has never met clingers and who reached his position on the basis of connections rather than accomplishments. If these are our standards, then most kids know they are doomed to fail. They know that anything they do that doesn’t quite meet the lofty Ivy standards won’t elevate them from their victim status, not saving lives as an EMT on the weekend night shift or spotting a way to save energy and money in the company they work for or getting their hometowns to send school supplies to the Iraqi villages where they are stationed. Ben Franklin knew the power of the ordinary citizen and he drew on it to develop a fire department, a library and much more. Today recognition of that power is gone. Instead we acclaim the benevolence of a certain class that shows it cares by flying across the country in a private jet to attend a benefit for poor victims. And the kids who are trying to imagine their future see thuggery as the way to go.
Notice that both Obama and his lovely bride advise all students and graduating students to forgo the evil $$ of private enterprise but instead dedicate their lives to public service. (Of course, with government workers now earning much more than their private-worker equivalents, the kids don’t even have to forego the $$, not so evil now that they come from the generous and benevolent Government.)
These people have an agenda, and it’s NOT an agenda that includes a strong America.

It’s not political correctness, bug-wit. Jews (me being one) are not supposed to write the word completely and I’ve been writing it that way for most of my 50 years.

Writing the Name of God
Jews do not casually write any Name of God. This practice does not come from the commandment not to take the Lord’s Name in vain, as many suppose. In Jewish thought, that commandment refers solely to oath-taking, and is a prohibition against swearing by God’s Name falsely or frivolously (the word normally translated as “in vain” literally means “for falsehood”).
Judaism does not prohibit writing the Name of God per se; it prohibits only erasing or defacing a Name of God. However, observant Jews avoid writing any Name of God casually because of the risk that the written Name might later be defaced, obliterated or destroyed accidentally or by one who does not know better.
The commandment not to erase or deface the name of God comes from Deut. 12:3. In that passage, the people are commanded that when they take over the promised land, they should destroy all things related to the idolatrous religions of that region, and should utterly destroy the names of the local deities. Immediately afterwards, we are commanded not to do the same to our God. From this, the rabbis inferred that we are commanded not to destroy any holy thing, and not to erase or deface a Name of God.
It is worth noting that this prohibition against erasing or defacing Names of God applies only to Names that are written in some kind of permanent form, and recent rabbinical decisions have held that writing on a computer is not a permanent form, thus it is not a violation to type God’s Name into a computer and then backspace over it or cut and paste it, or copy and delete files with God’s Name in them. However, once you print the document out, it becomes a permanent form. That is why observant Jews avoid writing a Name of God on web sites like this one or in newsgroup messages: because there is a risk that someone else will print it out and deface it.
Normally, we avoid writing the Name by substituting letters or syllables, for example, writing “G-d” instead of “God.” In addition, the number 15, which would ordinarily be written in Hebrew as Yod-Hei (10-5), is normally written as Teit-Vav (9-6), because Yod-Hei is a Name. I went to many years of Hebrew School and even 4 years of Marshalliah Hebrew High School (after public school) and I did not know about the Yod-Hei admonition. Learn something new here all the time, however I am not Orthodox.

The word “God” is not the name of any god, but a noun, like “table” or “chair.” So the command not to desecrate the name of God does not apply to the word “God” or “god” (or “Goddess” or “goddess”).
The rabbis of old also did not know about the logical distinction between using a word and mentioning it (object language and metalanguage). “Israel is a country on the eastern Mediterranean” is in the object language, about the country of Israel, while “”Israel is a country on the eastern Mediterranean”" “is a sentence in English” is not is not about Israel but about the sentence about Israel, and so is in the metalanguage.
So mentioning the name of God, which for the Jews is “Yahweh”, is not the same as using it.

I take exception to all Christians being lumped together as ignorant of Jewish practices. Though many Christians, and I think a much higher percentage of unbelievers are infact ignorant of Jewish practices, there many Christians who hold Judiasm in the highast regard.

Not sure what a bug-wit is however I appreciate the detailed response on why G-d was used in the original comment. It is fair to call me ignorant on this as well, although unintentionally so. Appreciate Zorina raising the point, no I know too.

A “bug-wit” is pretty self-explanatory. Perhaps Zorina could have merely asked a question as to why Jews write the name of G-d with a hyphen instead of attacking me out of ignorance, and then I wouldn’t have used the aforementioned phrase to describe her intellectual agility.
As for my Christian brothers and sisters, I wholeheartedly embrace their comradeship in the struggle to retake our country. So, yet again I say G-D BLESS AMERICA.
There’s also a word for people who blithely use a cryptic term – one which appears to the uninitiated probably an adolescent effort to be censorious or insulting – for a concept that many deem the most important in their lives, indeed their very creator, without explaining what the term means or why they’re using it, and then blithely call someone a nasty name for being ‘ignorant’ of it.

I agree with your criticism of AG Holder, the handling of the New Black Panther voter intimidation case, etc. But I don’t agree with your “unbirthday” comments. America has always been flawed. It was 89 years between the statement in the Declaration of Independence of 1776 that “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their Creator” with certain inalienable rights, including “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” until the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865. Then it was another 55 years before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920, and then another 36 years before the Supreme Court struck down the doctrine of Separate but Equal education in Brown v. Board of Education in 1956. We are imperfect but are striving to do better.
America stand for an ideal of freedom and equality under law. We have always fallen short of that ideal and will continue to do so, but we should still celebrate the American ideal – what is great about our country.
The story of J. Christian Adams reminds me of the words of Robert F. Kennedy: “It is from numberless acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped.”
In his book Burden of Proof, Scott Turow wrote this eulogy to one of his characters: “He failed, as we all fail, and perhaps more often than some. Yet he recognized fundamental things. Not that we are evil; for we are not. But that, by whatever name – self-interest, impulse, anger, lust, or greed – we are inclinded that way; and that it is our tragedy to know this can never change; our duty to try at every moment to overcome it; and our glory occasionally to succeed.”
So it is with America. It is flawed and never fully lives up to the perfect words of its founding documents, but it has the strength to keep striving to do better the glory of sometimes succeeding. We have much to celebrate about America today and every Independence Day.
If we rail too much against working in our own “self interest,” we risk destroying what makes America the greatest country that has ever existed. It is not out of concern that his fellow man be well-fed that the butcher continues to cut meat, it is because by feeding his fellow man he will himself earn a living. And so it is with all occupations, at least OUTSIDE of Government.
One evening many years ago I met up with friends, a rather happy-go-lucky couple, at a neighborhood pub. The wife asked where my husband was and I answered that he was at work and would probably be there until ten or eleven o’clock. She sniffed, “Isn’t he awfully greedy?” Astonished, I responded, “No, there’s work that needs to be done and he’s the one who can do it, so he’s doing it.” So that couple defined “greed” as working beyond “9 to 5.” (He worked at a bank and I later learned that he had directed a loan to HER business, a loan that should not have been extended under the bank’s rules. Now I would probably define THAT as greed, but that’s me. Oh, and when the bank discovered that he had made that loan, he was, uh, involuntarily retired.)
I think this entire administration defines “greed” in much the same way as my friends did. If you work hard to earn money, you’re greedy. If you get money by cheating “the man,” that’s not so greedy.
I agree with Bob that the country has always been flawed, but also agree with Roger that identity politics is pernicious and has destroyed the positive accomplishments of the 1960s movements. However, the Holder DoJ has simply realized what has been for some time the tacit assumption of the left and the civil rights establishment, namely that discrimination is wrong only if its subjects are certain groups. It’s OK and even praiseworthy if the subjects are unapproved groups. I call this the Matsuda Doctrine after law professor Mari Matsuda who articulates it, and I am not misrepresenting her views here.
Professor Matsuda, incidentally, refers to herself as among a “previously silenced” minority. A Google search of her name comes up with over 20,000 hits. The partiarchy doesn’t seem to have silenced her effectively.
And this all leads to what is now an implicit assumption in virtually all p;rogressive and leftist policy: Americans have rights based on their membership in certain groups, not as individuals. The NBPP case, the fascinating Ike Brown case from down south, and in fact the entire diversity and affirmative action movement rest on such an assumption and are neither explicable nor defensible on any other basis.
As to what Dr. King would have made of this, I can’t say, either. But he did say he wanted people to be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. The DoJ rejects that idea.
The Obama administration’s handling of the DOJ Black Panther incident is quite simple: they’re simply applying affirmative action to whites! Sending nightstick-wielding thugs to white polling places is the affirmative act designed to keep whites from voting!

I am thankful for my family and their investment in and service to our country. My grandfathers, uncles, father and brother who served in the military, my grandmother who built their farm house and could make anything, and my parents who gave me opportunities they never had.

I don’t know, maybe in some way we needed something to shake us back to how much we ought to appriciate what we have had here in America that the rest of the world has gone without, it’s sad to see it taken for granted but to me there’s another issue that should be brought out. There used to be a commercial for the United Negro College fund some of you may remember it’s slogan; “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” and when I see poll after poll stating 100% of black Americans votes (African Americans as they prefer to be called apparently) it makes kind of sad that in such a great Country it seems for some anyway almost a sin to think for yourself, with your own mind that (again I don’t mean to offend but that) God gave you. Some insist on staying with the pack, never swaying, never allowing themselfs to be an individual in such a great land, where you really can speak your mind without fear of retribution weather your a black American or an African American or a white American or a European American ( If you were born in Africa or somewhere in Europe or elsewhere I could see perhaps laying claim to giving yourself such a title, however too many for too long have truly struggled to come here for a better life for they would not have made the sacrifices to come had they felt they were better off staying where they were, it’s a free Country, if you don’t feel it’s worth the fight to defend it let alone damn it you would do us all a favor to just stay wherever it is you came from. As for the rest of us we will be happy, thankful and damn proud to call ourselfs just simply an American, here in the land of the free, the home of the brave. The New Black Panthers case is certainly red meat worthy of clear exposure to good old American sunshine. A confirmation of the worst fears of every rational American reverent of the Founding Fathers and the Constitution.
The wonder is why higher ups, probably including Holder, would intrude so radically into a minor criminal case that would otherwise be long forgotten by now. The unwillingness of the administration to back off this scandal quickly demonstrates how racially radical it is at its highest levels.

Mr. Simon, I suspect you give Holder too much credit. Some of the culprits are Democrat officials (even pollwatchers! imagine that) so there is a vested interested in ignoring cases such as these because they benefit the Democratic party. One can never know to what extent their actions are motivated by ideology or vested interest; they may not be fully conscious of it themselves as it is tempting to do something unethical in your interest and convince yourself that you are doing it for a greater ideological cause (end justifying the means).
I can´t think of any instance where a politician or official did something unethical that went against their interest, at best they may delude themselves they were doing it for a greater good. That being the case, it is extremely likely that the motive is corruption, not ideological zeal.

Well, with so many academics espousing the idea that only white people can be racist it’s really not surprising that a case like this would be dropped. it’s viewed as “pay back time.” The democrat party does it’s best to stir up racial hatred and create suspicion between white people and people of color, but when it comes down to it, we have only ourselves to blame. We’ve let the left take over academia, and have not challenged these ideas. We have allowed the left to take over even K-12 schools, where many of these ideas are also now being taught. If you don’t believe me check out a book called,”Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?,” by Tatum. This book has been recommended to many high schools! In this book the author plainly states that only white people can be racist because they benefit from a system of white privilege. This is considered an acceptable book? What school board allowed this to happen? We have allowed this to happen, and it is up to all of us to counter it before it’s too late. If we want to change ideas then we need to start working within the realms of ideas: education, journalism, media, art, etc..
There is a very good article today in the Australian press by Melanie Phillips and it is her observation (my words) that the people of Australia and Britain have had enough of multiculturalism and the politicians who promote it. This American has had enough as well. Bring on the elections!
The fact that a raciist black can and is getting away with intimidation of white voters is criminal and so is the dismmisal of the case.
Case in point: What if a group of KKK decided to intimidate black voters at the polls there would have been a criminal case brought by the so called DOJ and the Atty J who himslef is a crooked indiviual. But of course you don’t have to look far the apple does not fall far from the tree. The entire administration is wrought with corruption.
So therefore under the current feloney admistration if you are black or a memeber of thuganomics then you have a pass free from criminal convitions.
I beleive that in Noevmber there will be a backlash and trouble is coming. It is going to look alot like Iraq during the elections. Question I have is where were the police when this occured and why were the indiviuals not arrested?

This is NOT just Obama. Adams noted that this problem, the view that “White people don’t have civil rights” was under the BUSH ADMINISTRATION, and widely held by: most of the lawyers in the Civil Rights Division, most of the Bush Justice Dept, and most if not all of the media.
It is systemic. It is part of a system that believes that all White people, save a neo or post-Calvinist select “saved” are tainted by the original sin of “racism” and therefore deserve eternal damnation and punishment.
In addition, the sort of thing that ordinary White guys have to do in order to advance their careers: get along, go along, do boring, mind-numbing work, grind things out, make them repulsive to their female peers, who raised to equality, find 80% or more of their White male peers “creepy” or “icky” because they are the same exact status and earning power (and sometimes less) than they are!
Hence the White female view reflected in advertising (95% aimed at women) of doofus, dorky, icky and weird White guys and the cool-hip Black guy. Add in dynastic ambitions of the recently made it (the Clintons, Podestas, and so on) with those who have it made for generations (the Bushes, Kennedys) and you have an institutional, systemic wide view that NO ORDINARY WHITES HAVE CIVIL RIGHTS.
Of course we are not equal under the law. Non-Whites are part of the neo-Calvinist elect, the predestined saved, and ordinary Whites the damned. Not the least of which is the latter pose a threat to advance into the same status as those who have it made, with disastrous results for mating opportunities for sons (who won’t be special anymore, just ordinary, and therefore “creepy.”)
No one should be of any possible view that this can be changed. It did not star with Obama and will not end with him either. No hearing or publicity will make the slightest bit of impact. The failure to convict OJ, or call the acquital what it was (the equivalent of Byron De La Beckwith’s jury nullification for the murder of Medgar Evers), or the failure to charge the brutal near killing of Reginald Denny as a hate crime, shows that the rot extends back decades.
One would have to send every lawyer, judge, law school dean, law school professor, reporter, editor, and the sum total of every elite White person making more than $10 million a year into an alternative dimension to change this legal ruling that effectively, White people who are ordinary have no civil rights.
IT CANNOT BE CHANGED. As a matter of practicality.
Therefore, we ordinary Whites will just have to live with it. At a minimum, we should openly declare that since we lack all civil rights, we do not support anyone else having it either. There is ZILCH possibility of obtaining civil rights and rule of law for all. There is a strong possibility of simply abolishing the Civil Rights Bureau under the DOJ, and defunding any effort to enforce ANY civil rights anywhere.
Ordinary White people cannot obtain civil rights for themselves. Thats not in the cards. But they can put everyone else on the same playing field.
Whiskey, please quit yourself. You need an intervention (and NOT the latest booze named ‘intervention’ *ahem*).
All of the white men I know are winning custody battles and receiving food stamps and free medical on TOP of that. Men who join unions or who take public sector jobs are just as much teat suckers as the single moms.
It’s all unsustainable and the cards are going to collapse soon but, to blame it ALL on white women is pathetic.
Roger, I have never witnessed (in my fairly young lifetime) such a somber 4th of July. I tried to whoop everyone into an uplifting “USA! USA! USA!” and I was not met with my neighborhood’s usual happy and rhetorical echo of the same.
I’m honestly scared for us, for ALL of us. There is a creeping evil (that’s the only phrase I can come up with) that is a painless foreboding that is merely a shadow of what REAL pain is sure to come.
I’m afraid, Roger. VERY afraid.

There are hard working people like you and me everywhere and we’ve just about had enough. And the people who are not working or are underemployed have already had enough of this clown and his posse. I just can’t believe that from where we are today that enough people will forget and pull the lever for more of the same. It will be time to turn the page and bring some real hope and change to the American people. He cannot win without ACORN. I’m a lifelong Democrat and I guess I never realized how much I could despise the left wing of the party I left in 2008. Shame on all of you! This is America and if you want to live in a socialist society then MOVE ON. America – love it or leave it. As a show of goodwill, I’ll even help you pack.

Us TRUE AMERICANS have to stay strong and fight the good fight. It was just sad and strange for my whole neighborhood to have lost so much of its pride in patriotism. I think everyone is BROKE and pooped out which is RIFE for a dictator to take over by WEAKENING us.

Dear Mr. Simon: The correct form of the proverb is “A fish rots from the head down” or, more simply, “A fish rots from the head,” meaning, of course, that the decay, deterioration, or corruption of an organization starts with its leadership. The “head” of this piscine metaphor works much better than “top,” which is difficult, though not impossible, to locate on a fish.
In any case, the brains of the operation are the first to go, as this administration has amply and tragically proved.
