10. Abiding is a science as well as an art.

Patience is an inherent aspect of abiding. Other definitions include “to endure without yielding,” “to accept without objection,” and “to remain stable.” In the world of the Internet and social media technology, abiding is an anachronistic action. We have been shaped by our media to function at rapid speeds. One of the biggest goals of Common Core is to increase the speed at which students mentally process information. Not study, analyze and comprehend, but process and regurgitate the way they would like and share a Twitter or Facebook post. Abiding flies in the face of today’s high-speed reactionary culture.

In the Big Lebowski, John Goodman abided in the character of Walter Sobchak, and then in the recent movie The Monuments Men, Goodman abided in another character named Walter. There must be something to those Walters, but that's just my opinion, man.

Maybe it's the Coen brothers who are the Lamed-Vavnikim.

I've been called the Dude and a Jeff Bridges lookalike. The idea that the Dude is like George Bailey and helps others merely by being around is something that I also think about myself.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't remembered that Townes van Zandt had a song on the sound track until I heard it in one of the clips.

I'll have to watch this movie again.

The Coen Brothers are soul-less ripoff artists who try to pass off their empty thefts of others' genius as "hommages."

They fool some people---which is merely a testament to how slick packaging and good art direction can substitute for substance.

With all due respect, the Dude is just the kind of self-absorbed jerk who would be a pain in the butt in real life. You ask him his name and he goes into a whole long dissertation on whether he's to be called "Dude," "Duder," etc., etc. Just tell us your name, jerk!

Great points. One more thing illustrated by the Dude's abiding is that he apparently transcended and outgrew his long-ago radical activism -- "the original Port Huron Statement..." - how many boomers can identify with that!
