The New York Times reports on The One’s address to a group of multidenominational religious leaders:

“I know there’s been a lot of misinformation in this debate, and there are some folks out there who are frankly bearing false witness,” Mr. Obama told a multidenominational group of pastors, rabbis and other religious leaders who support his goal to remake the nation’s health care system.

Ann Althouse responds:

Bearing false witness? Breaking the 9th Commandment? So his opponents are sinners. I’m trying to imagine the separation-of-church-and-state freakout if George Bush had taken this approach to arguing for one of his policies.

Ann’s post is titled, “”Obama Would Like You To See Government As Religion.”

Hey, some of us noted that Obama viewed government as a sort of transcendent form of religion as far back as the fall of 2007. Or at the least, that both he and Michelle certainly enjoy using language that describes it in that fashion.

Marx said that religion is the opiate of the masses. It seems to me that government is the religion of the elite.

“It seems to me that government is the religion of the elite.”

Good point. The Progressives actually did believe that government was something of a substitute secular religion. They perceived themselves as extremely virtuous and well educated. The dumb masses simply cannot handle their own affairs. Kindly government officials must make the ultimate decisions. Barack Obama has the best intentions—and that should scare the hell out of you. He means to help you whether you like it or not. Moreover, he is more than willing to lie to you allegedly for your own benefit. After all, you are too stupid to handle the truth.
