Dr. Helen

sociopath

Chateau Heartiste has an interesting post on sociopathy rising in America:

Is sociopathy prevalence on the rise in America? According to the author of the book The Sociopath Next Door, it is. American culture has become a breeding ground for sociopaths.

I have written about this increase before as I kind of wonder if we are renaming people as socipaths who really aren’t. That said, I thought Chateau Heartiste made some interesting points about male sociopaths:

Male sociopaths do better with women. This is indisputable. If sociopathy is increasing in America, then we must look to the foundational market of human interpersonal relations — the sexual market — to discover the source of this increasing sociopathy. Quite simply, if more women are more often rewarding sociopaths with their sex, then the supply of sociopathy will increase….

To be a high level player, you have to be blessed with a touch of sociopathy. Without that trait for timely detachment, you will empathize too much with the particular needs and reproductive goals of women. That distracting emotional resonance will hinder your ability to hurt a woman’s feelings and, sadly you’ll discover, rare is the woman who joyfully surrenders her body to a man who is careful to spare her feelings.

So sociopathy has its privileges. But no nation of sociopaths ever put a man on the moon.

We as a society do not want to encourage sociopathy, but that is what we are doing. And, as Chateau Heartiste points out, it is beneficial to the individual in sexual terms, but our society will be made worse for it by being less innovative. But you get more of what you reward, and less of what you punish. Hence, we should expect to see more sociopathy in the future. All the while, women and their sychophants will be muttering “where have all the good men gone” while simultaneously breeding the seeds of sociopathy in some men by their actions and behaviors.

Many people here know a former article writer and instructor at Pasadena Community College named Hugo Schwyzer. He claims that he was even diagnosed as a Cluster B clusterf#ck, with narcissism and a touch of sociopathy.

He was transparent and phony (at least to me), but it was amazing to see all the women who worshiped him. He was nailing his female students and other women left and right.

Maybe the problem is that America is just getting really maudlin, drama-queenish and downright stupid on average in this age of reality shows and Dr Phil and Kim Kardashian. All you need then is a psychopath who just plays a role - he doesn't even have to be perfect.

Mandatory HR screening for sociopaths should prevent many of them from rising to positions where they damage society. http://alfidicapitalblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/sociopaths-need-careers-too.html

Real sociopathy is grounded in biology, not in culture. I strongly suspect these men are imitating sociopathy -- something that becomes much easier for men when they have been raised by a single mom, especially following divorce. Their empathy exists, but has been blunted by the trauma of their parents' divorce.

Here's something else to consider: cops and firemen and US Marines and wholesome athletic types do pretty well with women too.

What sociopaths have in common with them is that they also tend to not be wusses.

You would think so, but I've seen lots of wives of military guys. They don't strike me as being particularly good looking. As a side note, the "West Pac" wives are also not known for their great chastity.

I was single back in the late '80s when the USS Juneau paid a call on its namesake, and brought with it a unit of Marines. Juneau, Alaska is a company town, and the company is the government of the State of Alaska. You won't make it five minutes into a conversation with anyone who works for government or who has worked for government without knowing their State job title, salary range, who they worked for, and who they know.

There is a pretty rigid caste system for dating if you or the woman you're interested in work for the State. Generally, a guy had to outrank her and be able to do something for her for a woman to be at all interested. I was below the elected and appointed official level but still pretty well up the food chain so I did alright, but I also knew that there was a whole cadre of pretty women who were simply inaccessible to me because they reserved themselves for politicians, appointees, and, sometimes, lobbyists if the lobbyist was rich and well-known.

Then the Marines came to town and stayed several days. I saw women who wouldn't give you the time of day unless you were at least a Deputy Commissioner hanging off 22 year old enlisted Marines and grinding on them in the clubs. You couldn't get laid the whole time they were in town because all the party girls were busy - and it wasn't safe to get laid for a long time afterwards until "things cleared up."

I saw a derivative of the same thing years later with women off the cruise ships. You could sit in one of the waterfront watering holes in an Armani suit surrounded by all the accoutrement of power and position and not get a moment's notice from the women. Sit there in a battered old Greek fisherman's cap, vaguely nautical clothes, preferably with a rigger's knife on your belt and wearing either rubber boots or battered Sperrys, and you could troll for sport caught tourists to your heart's content.

I actually posted much of the following somewhere here at PJ some months ago. It is just as apt here... Women loathe the compliant and metrosexual men they encounter on the job and in classrooms - men who quake in fear of a lawsuit or accusations of harassment -- and view them as wimps. And so they mate with "bad-boys," even if that means being abused, abandoned or having to support them. Samuel Goldwyn said it best: "Women like bums."

That is the great descriptor of the whole Cultural Marxist project.....to promote sociopathy as the normalcy. The deconstruction of European Christendom.

The briefest glimpse of today's Washington, D.C. would instantly prove that the 'new sociopathy' is definitely not confined to men. Politicians and appointees of both genders in nearly equal numbers in the current administration lie, break laws and glibly brutalize millions without a shred of conscious while accumulating power and enriching themselves as if it were their due.

That seems to be the real, important and shocking 'new sociopathy' - as apposed to the always idiosyncratic and non-predictive dating chemistry. Dating is by definition a consensual temporary human interaction entered into for any number of reasons from the serious to the larky and daring one time experiment. It's tough to pin the sociopathy label on that sort of thing.

Yet, Doctor Martha chose to leer over the 'sex market' in a completely PC and cowardly fashion to come up with the smear she apparently intended. Could the attitudes and actions of the trend setters in Washington and the media be influencing normal people's behavior? Are the kinks & dubious pleasures once only the provenance of the upper classes now affordable to all? Such considerations are not even hinted at.

Cultural mores are changing. Should that be pathologized?

Perhaps, individualism as we have known it cannot survive without the balancing weight of Judeo-Christian internalized guilt that curbs our rudest impulses. But that would be neurosis...

I doubt the percentage of true sociopaths approaches 4%. Instead, men respond to incentives and will act however they have to act in order to score. A man may act like a bad boy with no empathy because it works, but actually feel some guilt. Just not that much guilt when the "rules of the game" he sees consistently reward bad behavior.
