Yasir Arafat Is Still Dead and We Know Who Really Did Him In
Yasir Arafat is still dead. True, he was once alive. I sat across from him in his Gaza office, for example. And he even had a copy of my history of the PLO on his bookshelf so he must have been of sound mind at the time. It’s not my fault. I told him to start jogging and cut down on sweets. But he didn’t listen. On November 4, 2004, he died, a fate he had previously imposed on thousands of far more innocent people.
The effort now by various Palestinian factions to imply Israel killed him is the funniest thing in the Middle East since the U.S. director of national intelligence said in a congressional briefing that the Muslim Brotherhood was a secular democratic organization. What’s dismaying is how much play Western media are giving this charge as if it should be taken seriously. When the West behaves in this way it signals at the least a dangerously naive credulousness and at worst a profound anti-Jewish and anti-Israel complex. The New York Times and Washington Post take this nonsense seriously.
But there’s something else in this story, something very chilling indeed. Revolutionary Islamists especially, but many Muslims otherwise, believe that Jews tried to murder Muhammad, the founder of Islam, and even if they failed that the poison shortened his life. The accusation that Jews are the murderers of prophets — with Muslims throwing in the founder of Christianity also — is a phrase that derives from this story. It is frequently heard from Hamas and others. This is a blood libel, an alleged crime that then leads to the view that Jews are absolutely evil and should be wiped out. In short, it is a rationale for genocide. When Iran, Hamas, Hizballah, and the Muslim Brotherhood say that Israel should be wiped off the map and Jews generally should be murdered, that incitement is the inevitable consequence of this line of thinking.
That Western observers are unaware of all of this history — repeated daily in inciteful sermons found in Middle East mosques — is quite evident. Such a lack of knowledge leads them to believe that the conflicts they say are easily resolvable, quickly settled by more Israeli concessions or still continuing because of Israeli actions when the causes are much deeper and the solutions far more remote. Western societies today are obsessed with searching everywhere for racism and hate speech. Well, the idea that the Jews murdered Arafat (rather than that Arafat spent most of his career murdering Jews) falls into that category.
As for the specific claims in the Arafat case, they are easily disposed of:
First of all, anyone who saw Arafat during the last year of his life knew he was seriously ill and steadily worsening. His lips trembled, he looked disoriented, and he wasn’t as articulate as usual. Even on television you couldn’t possibly miss his distress. Parkinson’s disease was a likely diagnosis though Crohn’s disease was said to be another probable medical problem for the dictator.
His doctors obviously knew that he was in bad shape. But, and this is what’s most important, they didn’t do anything about it. The prospect of Arafat’s death was so traumatic for the movement — which had known no other leader during 43 years for Fatah, 36 years for the PLO, and its entire ten year life for the Palestinian Authority. By not taking serious action and giving him better treatment, the key to the mystery is this: His own doctors and movement killed Arafat. So if Israel killed Arafat, then his own doctors and the entire PLO, Fatah, and PA leadership were in on the conspiracy. Indeed, Arafat himself, by not more actively seeking medical help or speaking about his problems, was also in on the conspiracy. This is unlikely.
Second, the doctors were shut up and the report of his death was kept secret by Arafat’s widow Suha Arafat. Since his colleagues had access to a lot of this information they also kept quiet. In other words, we are supposed to believe that those in the world who most hated Israel had evidence that Israel had something to do with his death but they kept it secret?
Third, suddenly, almost eight years later Suha and other Arafat loyalists are making claims. But there is no new evidence whatsoever. Obviously, this is a publicity stunt. Let them release the huge medical report on his death. Let them permit the French doctors to have a press conference. Let them dig up Arafat. Until one of those things happens, why should the Western media fall for this trick? So again, if there was the slightest suspicion that Arafat was being murdered, Arafat’s wife, doctors, and all of the Palestinian leadership were helping the conspiracy. This is also unlikely.
Fourth, the claims that Arafat was poisoned by Israel using some exotic radioactive means have been made from the day Arafat was planted but have always faded away, at least internationally, because no evidence was offered. Old fables are being treated like new revelations. Such claims of Zionist conspiracies are always promoted in order to slander and discredit Israel when just about anyone significant dies in the Arab world.
Fifth, if Arafat had been poisoned by radioactive substances his symptoms would have been extreme and evident. They include nausea, hair loss, throat swelling and paleness. Moreover, Arafat would have died really fast, but he lingered for a long time.
The history of this myth shows that it is the Palestinian leadership, not Israel, that has something to hide, that has kept everything secret. I suspect the secret is the incompetence of his own doctors.
So did Arafat die of AIDS? After my own serious research on this matter I could find no evidence for this assertion. And I know that both Israeli and U.S. intelligence had no evidence that Arafat was homosexual either on the basis of in-depth discussions over many years. Sources like Ahmad Jibril — a life-long enemy of Arafat — and other unreliable sources cited are not impressive. If there is evidence to the contrary I will certainly revise my view. But you should know that the Israeli government and intelligence position–privately as well as publicly–is that they have no evidence of Arafat being a homosexual or suffering from AIDS.
The rumor began with an article by Oriana Fallaci whose only evidence was that his bodyguards at the time were extremely handsome young men. (By the time I was seeing him in the 1990s that was certainly not true at all.)
Of course, Arafat was a weird person and in our biography, Arafat: A Political Biography, Judith Colp Rubin and I explain his psychology and personality. One of my favorite Palestinian jokes about Arafat recounts that he is patting the head of a little girl and asks her, “Whose daughter are you?”
She answers, “Yours.” Arafat was considered by his countrymen to be so cold that he didn’t recognize his own begotten daughter. The story is almost plausible.
But I repeat: there is no reason to think Arafat was a homosexual or died of AIDS or poisoning. He was overweight, ate an unhealthy diet, worked long hours, didn’t take care of himself (he believed eating honey would keep him healthy), and had very bad doctors despite their local reputations.
So we know who killed Arafat: his doctors, entourage, movement, and of course his own body. Yet when I go to Yahoo, what do I see but Arafat’s “mysterious” death as the lead story in the entire world, as if any accusation made against Israel must be true.
Arafat may have been a homosexual but proponents of the theory that he died of AIDs have a basic problem: If that is so, then Suha, the Palestinian leaders, and the French doctors know it. Wouldn’t the Palestinians keep quiet rather than draw attention to the question and claim they will open the documents or even the grave? And don’t they fear that Israel and possibly other countries would then provide detailed information of Arafat’s hijinks including photos? At any rate, until there is real evidence the issue will remain unresolved.

One interesting point is that it implies the French doctors took some action which might have been correct but could also imply that they are at fault for Arafat’s turn for the worse, giving them a motive for not revealing details of his treatment.

There was a lengthy report by the Centre for Information on Intelligence and Terrorism in Israel on Arab/Muslim antisemitism developing into a strategic threat against Israel, a conversion of the war against Israel into a war against the Jews, and its like effect to make the conflict more intractable over time – by giving it a religious dimension based on the total unacceptability of the physical existence of Jews – as opposed to the ‘nationalistic’ hatred of Israel of Nasser’s day.
While the religious angle was likely present to some extent from day one, it now occupies a larger place in the realm of anti-Israel animus.

Funny choice of words, Rob and JA. I’ve been reading memoirs of KGB officers about 1970′s ME — they thought Khaddafi a good asset but Arafat a poly-perverse punk, didn’t trust him. Stories about him sexing down his bodyguard in a Bulgarian hotel and much more. AIDS must be what it is, and I think that secret has been let out the bag once or twice.

J Post reports today that the level of activity reported to be on the clothing is much too high for it to be the result of Po 210 poisoning 8 years ago. They report 180 mBq of activity. Po 210 has a physical half life of 130 days. My back of the envelope calculations (if they are correct) gets an initial dose on that spot of clothing of roughly 1.6 GBq.
A spot on clothing, presumably from body secretions would represent only a tiny fraction of the total ingested body dose. For comparison the entire liver is only 2% of total body weight. Even a fair amout of saliva, blood or urine such as might find its way on some clothing, is a small fraction of that.
Livitenko is estimated to have recieved a total dose of 2.0 GBq, many times the minimal lethal dose and enough to produce symptoms almost immediately after ingestion. Arafat would have recieved much higher doses at least 100x what was found on his clothing resulting in catastrophic fatal hemmorhage and GI bleeding and there is no indication that this happened. There is no way the French doctors would have missed the diagnosis at those levels.
Not to mention that at that dose, some of those coming into contact with Arafat may have gotten ill.
Though I do remember photos of his arab docs trying to keep their distance from him, at the time. I thought it was AIDS they feared, in their superstitious manner.

Elder of Zyon has an article citing the original report from the Swiss lab. They have more specific information than I did and arrive at roughly the same dose, something on the order or 100GBq.
In addition the Swiss lab checked the original lab data from his urine samples at the hospital. They did check the urine by gamma spectrospcopy. While Po is an alpha emitter it does have a weak Gamma emmision at a distinctive energy level and there was no evidence of that.

With a half life of 130 (actually 138.4 days) less than .000005% of the polonium 210 would remain. That is not detecable. If a lab did detect polonium 210, it was placed on his clothing only recently.
If the truth is desired, Arafat’s widow can simply ask the French physicians ot release the cause of death. She hasn’t.
I feel certain if theis were a case of murder/assassination/exotic poisonong the French would feel obligated to reveal that information.

Consipracies abound in the Arab world. I had not made the connection to charges of deicide and prophet murder before but it makes a twisted kind of sense. But I’m afraid Barry Rubin rarely, if ever, checks this list (if he even knows it exists – I’ve noticed he’s not exactly a WordPress wiz). For what its worth, I was in a shop in the Old City of Jerusalem a few years
before Arafat’s death. We started chatting with the owner, who turned out to be a relative of the Jerusalem Palestinian leader Faisal Husseini. The shop owner told us that Arafat was ill and doctors had said he had only a couple of years to live. The owner hoped that Faisal Husseini would take over after Arafat died. Six months later, Faisal Husseini himself was dead at the age of 61. He died of a heart attack (or was it really?) in Kuwait.

Looks like a eschatology issue to me. Apparently devout male Muslims believe when they die they go to heaven to live ever after humping an endless supply of virgins, of which there is apparently always 72 to pick from at any one time. Needless to say, given the grim virgin scarcity for the living while waiting for the end times, apparently 72 waiting virgins for the dead can be quite an incentive for premature suicides and homicides in the Muslim culture. I heard an interesting remark about this 72-virgin belief a few years back. A claim was made that a careful examination of the relevant passages in the Koran, a small but critical translation error was discovered. The corrected passage revealed that, instead of receiving 72 virgins upon being martyred, a jihadi received only ONE 72 YEAR OLD VIRGIN. It was hoped that once this correction was more widely known, Muslim volunteers for martyrdom would be greatly reduced!

Last year at UC Irvine, I listned to some wacko Israeli professor named Jeff Halpin (who hates Israel) tell us how the IDF had something called spectral dust. Each grain of this stuff can be combined with a sample of someone’s DNA. Armed with that, the grains can seek, find and kill the person in question.
Maybe that’s how the Israelis killed Arafat.

What are the purposes of the claims made by Arafat’s widow and her supporters? What is so strange about a man of 75 years dying?
If I had to guess, it has something to do with Suha no wanting to cough up the billions Arafat stole over the years. The PA is very angry Suha is wasting this money on a life of luxury, when its own leaders haven’t managed to steal half as much of foreign aid, and besides, the money could be used for something more constructive than expensive champagne, such as weapons to kill Jews.

There is nothing complex about stupid. The area is intrinsically stupid. Jews came in and defeated twice their number to make Israel and then defeated countries with about 89 zillion, billion people. It’s Cortes and the Aztecs all over again. Syria, Egypt and Lebanon are lucky they have as much of their territory as they do, because frankly, without the U.N., we’d have an Jewish empire there – perhaps the first defensive empire in history. Arabs should try and figure out where Arabs come from before wondering where Jews come from and then ask if they want themselves irradiated, not whether Arafat was.
The first defensive empire in history – huh huh. Don’t think we would have conquered lots of land because we don’t need it, but we should have kept some buffer zones and territorial depth. Indeed every time the Arabs tried to destroy us we became stronger. After all the Jews were not famous for our military prowess in the last couple of millennia or so. Who would’ve thought Jews would develop a strong army? That would be laughable a hundred years ago. It’s the Arab attacks that forced us to develop military skills. We ended up having the strongest military in the region. That wasn’t the plan. We were supposed to devote our skills and energy to agriculture and technology. According to the original agreement between the emir Faysal and the Zionist leadership, after the fall of the Ottoman empire the Arabs would get a huge Arab caliphate/state on almost the entire Middle East, the Jews would get a small Jewish state (though a lot bigger than Israel today) on a tiny fraction of the land and help the Arabs find ways to develop their land with the Jewish technological knowledge. Faysal recognized the Jews as belonging to the same race as the Arabs and welcomed “our cousins” home. But that was not to be. The Brits and French divided the Middle East into many new nations and divided them between them, so the huge unified Arab state was off and the deal was off. It probably would have failed anyway.
I don’t know if it would have failed – may sense is that all those years ago it tended to be the leadership that was politicized or radicalized and not the average Arab in the region. Of course that’s far worse now but it’s interesting to think of the better way that could’ve been.

After reading all these silly comments above, it is time to set the record straight about who or what DID NOT kill Arafat. Not only was Israel NOT responsible for his death, time and time again Israeli agents actively PROTECTED Arafat when they could have easily killed him.
The reason was that Arafat was so utterly incompetent militarily, that Israel was afraid that when he died, someone else who actually knew how to fight like a soldier might take over. All Arafat knew how to do was murder children & civilians, which as bad as that was, never was a threat to the Jewish State.
This info was passed on to me some years ago by an Israeli colleague, who said Israel was actually sorry to see him dead. No one gave a damn who or what actually killed him.

As to Arafat’s doctors, I’m not sure I would accuse them of not giving him the proper treatment. I would be more inclined to believe he simply refused to take their advice. Muslims have a bad habit of just writing everything off as the will of Allah and I can’t see Arafat giving up all his favorite things just on the word of a bunch of doctors. In other words Arafat killed himself by means of neglect and stupidity.
