Daily Bible Reflection 11/01

Continuing a plan to get through the entire Bible in a year, follow as I journal through the reading. I have chosen a straightforward approach that begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation. This will not be an in-depth study or a comprehensive commentary. There are plenty of sources for such material. This is stage one Bible reading, taking the text at face value and sharing impressions.

Today’s reading comes from the book of Numbers, chapters 28 through 30, concerning sacrificial offerings and the making of vows. Some impressions from the text:

  • The bulk of today’s passage deals with various offerings to be made to the Lord on different occasions. Such offerings were a huge part of the Israelite’s lives, continually seeking to cover for their sin. The new covenant established by Christ relieved God’s people of this necessity.
  • If men make an oath, they’re expected to keep it. Simple.
  • If women make an oath, they’re also expected to keep it, but only if unopposed by their father or husband. That qualification may offend modern sensibilities, but patriarchal authority within the family stands as a model of the unified trinity.

Return soon as we continue our year-long journey through the text of the Bible.
