Daily Bible Reflection 10/17

Continuing a plan to get through the entire Bible in a year, follow as I journal through the reading. I have chosen a straightforward approach that begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation. This will not be an in-depth study or a comprehensive commentary. There are plenty of sources for such material. This is stage one Bible reading, taking the text at face value and sharing impressions.

Today’s reading comes from the book of Numbers, chapters 1 and 2, an account of Israel’s census. Some impressions from the text:

  • These first two chapters of Numbers are pretty dry reading, an account of a national census.
  • The inclusion of a census account speaks to the historicity of scripture. This isn’t the kind of thing you include in a contrived myth.
  • The number of Israelite men of fighting age was over 600,000. The total number of the roaming population might have been several multiples of that. This was truly a nation, difficult to govern.

Return soon as we continue our year-long journey through the text of the Bible.
