Huh. That’s certainly not the conventional wisdom.

Granted, you do have to take Daniel Eran Dilger with a grain of salt, because he tends to be a little… excitable. But the numbers come from comScore which has a fine track record. Perhaps more tellingly, Apple’s gains came during the iPhone 5’s end-of-life quarter, as the company (and savvy buyers) prepped for the iPhone 5S.
