Following the murderous attack by a deranged madman in Portland, Mayor Ted Wheeler wanted to shut down a pro-Trump rally in his city. Of course, the killer had been a Bernie Sanders/Jill Stein supporter. But Wheeler wanted the government to revoke a lawfully obtained permit for the June 4 rally, claiming:
Our city is in mourning, our community’s anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already difficult situation.
Wheeler sure made it clear that, somehow, supporters of the president would be responsible for any violence.
The rally has come and gone, and there was indeed violence. However — as is nearly always the case — it wasn’t the “far right” causing it. Don’t trust Fox News, The Daily Wire, or Breitbart for the facts on what happened? This, ladies and gentlemen, is CNN:
What began as a tense exchange of name-calling and profane insults took a turn when counterdemonstrators began throwing glass bottles, bricks and balloons of “foul-smelling liquid” at officers, Portland police said. Officers used pepper spray to push back the counterdemonstrators and closed the park where they had gathered, threatening to arrest anyone who remained.
Portland police did not indicate which side those arrested belonged to. CNN crews on the scene observed that most of the arrests were concentrated in the area of counterdemonstrators.
While CNN may have preferred to use the euphemism “counterdemonstrators,” what they actually meant was “violent leftist group Antifa.” CNN only referred to someone as an “antifascist” in a photo caption.
But even the left-leaning Guardian was honest about the culprits, however.
Once again, a politician portrayed the “right” as having some monopoly on political violence while ignoring that the vast majority of incidents are perpetrated by the left.
The killer, Jeremy Christian, was a man of the Left, and full of hatred — he just happened to be filled with a hatred that isn’t approved of by any members of the Left currently. Antifa certainly approves of hatred and violence, but towards different targets. Bricks are certainly deadly weapons.
But Wheeler wanted the government to squash the First Amendment rights of Trump supporters.
Considering he wanted to violate the civil liberties of his ideological opponents, perhaps he and Antifa aren’t all that different. Antifa is at least willing to get their own hands dirty, rather than rely upon Uncle Sam to do it for them.
