A couple of days ago, Rep. Nancy Pelosi commented on just why poor white people tend to not vote Democrat. Like a lot of progressives, she’s got some definite theories on the subject. Unsurprisingly, however, her comments show just how out of touch she is.
You see, technically, I qualify as a poor white. My income isn’t particularly high at this point, my wife isn’t working due to some medical issues, and we’re definitely struggling.
Pelosi made the claim:
“I think that, so many times, white — non-college-educated white males have voted Republican. They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s, God being the woman’s right to choose,” Pelosi told PBS’s Judy Woodruff in an interview Wednesday.
But, Pelosi contended, that’s changing because of Clinton’s “economic agenda to create jobs, good-paying jobs, increasing paychecks.”
The term “non-college-educated white males” is best translated as poor white males, since that’s exactly how Pelosi and her ilk see us.
First, let’s talk about economics. For many of us, the Democrats’ economic agenda – particularly minimum wage increases – has put us or someone we know out of work. We know exactly what the price of that piece of legislation is, and it sucks. Every time the minimum wage increases, someone we know gets laid off. In a business with only X amount of revenue, only Y amount can go for wages. That doesn’t magically change because the government decrees it.
We also have seen the last eight years of economic growth, and the lack thereof. There’s no reason to believe that anything Hillary Clinton does will help any of us get good jobs. At best, the local Olive Garden will hire one or two.
For people without college degrees, the best jobs are usually manufacturing. Take a look at the Detroit auto workers, for example. Factories put people to work at good wages for their region and usually don’t require a college degree.
Meanwhile, Democrats have a notorious reputation of being hostile to those kinds of places, despite the fact that many non-college-educated people see them as their best opportunities.
Either that, or we turn side jobs into full-time businesses. Of course, then we find ourselves knee deep in licensing laws, reporting regulations, the EPA, OSHA, and so on. Since we never went to college, many of us don’t understand just what the heck is going on at first. We’ll figure it out, but we do learn that the Democrats aren’t on our side.
Of course, Pelosi is right that guns do play a factor.
You see, many of us have to live in rough neighborhoods. So we arm ourselves. A few hundred dollars for a firearm is cheaper than moving somewhere we can’t afford, so that’s what we do. The gangbangers down the street have guns. Lots of them. Everything from Glocks to AKs.
However, Democrats want to take our means of self-defense away from us. They won’t do anything to those gangbangers, but we are expected to meekly accept whatever decree is passed down from on high.
No, we’ll hold onto our guns.
After all, empty promises of good jobs with good pay are easy in an election year. We’ve heard them all before. What we aren’t, is stupid. We know what we’ll get from the Democrats, and most of us aren’t willing to take a crap sandwich and pretend it’s filet mignon.
