Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) just released a video hitting at past footage of Donald Trump praising Democratic positions — the latest shots fired as the lawmaker tries to muscle back into the race.
The video includes Trump saying that “the economy does better under the Democrats,” “I like universal healthcare,” and “Hillary Clinton is a terrific woman… she’s a really good person.”
It uses Bill Clinton saying “it depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is” to answer the question about whether Trump is “telling it like it is.”
Paul has fallen to eighth place in the crowded GOP field, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average. Trump is out ahead of the pack.
Rand has increasingly been slamming Trump as a “fake conservative,” noting that the Tea Party movement that sent him to the Senate “was actually rebellion against fake conservatives.”
“It was rebellion against Republicans who grew the size of government. Republicans who doubled the debt and also Republicans who voted for this bank bailout to. Bailout Wall Street and all this taxpayer money that was spent on the big banks. Conservatives were all opposed to that. And yet, Donald Trump was for that. He was for ObamaCare before he was against it,” he told Fox yesterday.
“He has been for gun control before he was against it. He says, the Clintons are great with the economy and Democrats are better with the economy. So, I just think we ought to be very careful and ought to know who we are actually thinking about before people consider voting for him because I really think he is a fake conservative. I don’t think he is consistently been anything in his life other than a promoter of himself so people have to really listen to him and decide what he really stands for.”
Paul added that Trump’s “stupid kind of language… doesn’t really get us anywhere.”
“But it also makes you think that imperiousness that he is just going on say, well, I’m Donald Trump. And therefore, it is so,” he continued. “…And my concern is that he would grab up that power and really treat the country as sort of his little bully fiefdom.”
The new video comes after some Trump stabs at Paul on Twitter.
“Truly weird Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky reminds me of a spoiled brat without a properly functioning brain. He was terrible at DEBATE!” Trump tweeted Monday.
@RandPaul allowed to take advantage of the people of Kentucky by running for Senator and Pres. Why should Kentucky be back up plan?” he later added, referencing how Paul can run for president and keep his Senate seat at the same time under state law.
Then he added another dig: “.
@SenTedCruz had a very good debate, far better than Rand Paul.” Cruz and Trump met behind closed doors nearly a month ago at the request of Cruz, and Cruz has not been among the GOP hopefuls taking shots at the real-estate developer.
