To the surprise of absolutely no sentient being, the Senate’s senior (but by no means only) superannuated socialist, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Moscow), announced Monday that he was throwing his Russian fur hat into the ring for a fourth term as senator from the Vermont Soviet Socialist Republic. Vermont is for all intents and purposes a one-party state, as all socialist states are or quickly become, so we are now sentenced to feel the Bern until the selfless comrade is no less than 89 years old. Hey, it’s for the people!
Axios informed us blandly on Monday that Sanders “would continue to be the top progressive voice on Capitol Hill as Congress confronts massive policy battles over taxes and navigates social unrest over the Israel-Hamas war.” Yeah, what would the Congressional left do if Bernie retired? There are so few leftists on Capitol Hill and so few who love the limelight. What would shrinking violets such as AOC and Ilhan Omar do without him?
The Associated Press added that Sanders “has criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of the U.S. relationship with Israel even as he’s hailed much of Biden’s domestic agenda ahead of what could be a tough reelection fight for Biden against GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.” So apparently, Bernie wants to hang around until he can do a primo Late-Period Dianne Feinstein impersonation just to stick it to the Jewish state. That’s clear from the agenda he has articulated as he announced his “reelection” bid.
Sanders’ wish list includes a big early Christmas present for Hamas: the aged-like-fine-Stolichnaya Commie “said he wants the war in Gaza ended immediately, massive humanitarian aid to follow and no more money sent to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” Comrade Bernie explained: “We are living in a complicated and difficult political moment. I very strongly disagree with Biden in terms of the war in Gaza.” But anytime a fellow leftist criticizes Old Joe, he has to reestablish his ideological purity by reminding the world that Bad Orange Man is exponentially worse: “Donald Trump is in my view the most dangerous president, has been the most dangerous president in American history.”
Right. Old Joe Biden and his henchman Merrick Garland have a long and ever-lengthening record of being intolerant of dissent, the tolerance of which is the foundation of any free society. Besides the ongoing political persecution of Trump, other indications of wanting to criminalize opposition include the abortive Disinformation Governance Board that would have policed speech that dissented from the leftist establishment’s perspective, the Biden regime also sicced the FBI on angry parents protesting at school board meetings, worked with Twitter and other social media giants to silence and deplatform people with opposing views, and even sent spies into Catholic churches. But Bernie thinks it’s Trump who’s dangerous. Wow, a socialist who has no problem with crushing political dissent! Who would have expected it?
Why shouldn’t Bernie hang on in the Senate until he rivals Biden in mental acuity? Hanging on forever is a hallmark of socialist rulers. Remember, back in 1988, Sanders and his new bride honeymooned in the Workers’ Paradise itself, the Soviet Union. That young upstart Mikhail Gorbachev was in charge then, but he had followed a succession of gerontocrats that would be rivaled in superannuation only by Old Joe and today’s crop of American “public servants.”
Leonid Brezhnev died at age 75 in 1982 and was succeeded as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the de facto head of government, by Yuri Andropov, who was a young 68. When Andropov died in 1984, 72-year-old Konstantin Chernenko succeeded him and ruled until his own death thirteen months later.
Back in the 1980s, this succession of septuagenarians (and one who was nearly a septuagenarian) was widely seen as symbolic of the sclerotic, calcified nature of the Soviet bureaucracy and Soviet society in general. Nowadays, if these guys were American politicians, we’d be talking about how young and spry they are compared to the ones we have.

What this does is display before the world a corrupt kleptocracy in which the kleptocrats find the “public service” altogether too lucrative to retire and just keep hanging on to their place at the public trough for as long as they possibly can. If America survives this period of rapacious superannuated politicians, not only term limits, but age limits (and much more beyond that), should be seriously considered.
Bernie is already a multimillionaire with three luxurious homes. His socialism has served him well. But it’s time for him to pass the baton to his spiritual children, AOC and the rest, who threaten to continue to plague and pester the American people for decades to come.
