One of the leading Democratic candidates for governor of Virginia, former Rep. Tom Perriello, recently compared the election of Donald Trump to the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
“The election of Donald Trump was a little bit like, you know, a political and constitutional September 11 for us, if I can be honest,” Perriello told the crowd in Afton,
Perriello’s comparison was made during a discussion of “how big of a moment this is” for the country.
“The Democratic establishment, in my mind, has not understood how big of a moment this is,” Perriello said.
Perriello, a former congressman who was unseated after just one term, announced in January that he would be running for governor of Virginia. He is currently attempting to position himself as a more “progressive” option than Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, who was previously believed to have a clear path to the party’s nomination in the race.
Perriello later apologized for the comparison saying he regretted his remarks and he “won’t do it again.”
Allahpundit explains the over the top hysteria:
As tends to happen when one side is in hyper-outrage mode, a race begins to prove one’s ideological virtue by reaching for the most dramatic, hysterical analogy yet. For Rather, that’s Watergate and “worst scandal evah” rhetoric. For tools like Tom Perriello and Tom Friedman, it’s 9/11 analogies. “Ladies and gentlemen,” wrote Friedman yesterday, “we were attacked on Dec. 7, 1941, we were attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, and we were attacked on Nov. 8, 2016.” Perriello made the 9/11 point even more explicitly.
Dan Rather recently posted on Facebook that “Watergate is the biggest political scandal of my lifetime, until maybe now.”
Will all this hysteria and hyperbole damage the anti-Trump cause? Of course, it’s music to the ears of the rabid partisans of the left. But what about the rest of America?
I think as time goes on and Trump refuses to cooperate by acting like a tyrant, ordinary Americans will wonder what all the hubbub is about. At that point, this kind of nonsense will work against Democrats and damage them politically going into 2018.
