Omarosa Manigault, who once competed on Donald Trump’s show, “The Apprentice,” warned this week that in the end, all of Trump’s critics and detractors will “bow down” to the reality TV star and (in her view) future president.
The comment came in a trailer released Tuesday to promote the PBS Frontline documentary “The Choice 2016,” the network’s election-year profiles of the campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Manigault is currently director of Trump’s African-American outreach. She previously served as vice chairwoman for his National Diversity Coalition. In the trailer she declares, “Donald Trump is running for president because he truly believes he can help turn the nation around.” Then she adds ominously, “More importantly, every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump.”
What is it about being involved in the Trump campaign that makes his surrogates say the exact opposite of what needs to be said to convince skeptical, undecided voters that their candidate is rational, competent, ready to take the 2 a.m. call —and at this point, even reasonably sane?
I’m half convinced that there’s a Trump Campaign University class where surrogates are trained on the first day to make news. Period. Say whatever preposterous thing you have to—the crazier the better—the goal is to make your soundbite go viral. The only bad press is no press. This strategy is certainly great for TV ratings and it does get Trump’s name in the news constantly, but unlike in the primaries, it’s hurting him in the general election, where voters are not as hungry for red meat soundbites. And campaign circus aside, these episodes are an embarrassment to our electoral process and they’re contributing to the ongoing coarseness of our culture.
