A mother from Queensland, Australia, delivered her fourth child by C-section, which is fairly routine these days. What’s remarkable is that Sarah Toyer, 24, assisted in the delivery of her son—via C-section!

Toyer, whose three other children—Jay, 4, Ruby, 3, and Wyatt, 2—were all born by C-section, wanted to be more of a participant in the birth of her fourth baby. She explained to Babble that her first pregnancy failed to progress, which led to an emergency C-section. “I felt like my body failed at giving birth and felt so robbed after going through so much just to end up having a C-section,” she said.

After reading an article about maternal-assisted C-section, Toyer decided she wanted to give it a try.

“It was important to me,” Toyer told Babble, “because I had never been able to push my baby out and experience a normal labor and birth and thought this would be the closest thing to a natural birth, which I knew I could never have.”

But it wasn’t easy getting a doctor to agree to allow her to participate in the C-section.

“When I discovered I was pregnant I was determined to have a maternal assisted c-section! I talked to every midwife, doctor, and surgeon about what I wanted to do, but they all said it would depend on the surgeon on call that day” she wrote on the “Birth Without Fear” Facebook page.

Luckily, everything worked out as planned.

“Yes I delivered my son during my fourth cesarean. So, when the day came along we waited 8 hours at the hospital, then I was standing there next to the surgeon scrubbing up just as she was,” Toyer wrote on the Facebook page. “Maybe half an hour later I was lying on the operating table watching my son’s head being pulled from my womb. I reached down and put my hands under his arms and lifted the rest of him out of my own body. It was the most incredible thing I have ever done.”
