There’s been a New Year’s Day shooting in Israel:

Two people have died and and at least five been injured after a gunman opened fire at a bar in central Tel Aviv, Israeli police say. Police units are searching the Tel Aviv area for the suspect, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. The incident took place in a bar on Dizengoff Street.

It was not immediately clear what motivated the shooting, which follows a wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis over the past few months. An eyewitness told Israeli TV that the gunman was young and had an assault rifle.

As of 23 December, at least 21 Israelis had been killed, most of them in stabbings and shooting attacks by Palestinians.

At least 131 Palestinians have also been killed. More than half were said by Israel to be attackers. Others have been killed in clashes with Israeli forces.

On his Twitter feed, Mr Rosenfeld said an investigation was now working to establish whether the latest attack was “criminal (or) terrorist”.
