Famed Democrat strategist James Carville is mostly known for engineering Bill Clinton's stunning 1992 victory. I'm sure he was a smart guy, but he's kind of gone off the rails since President Donald Trump was first elected. I really, really want to give him credit for being critical of the socialist wave in his party, but I don't think he deserves it, and I'll tell you why.
The latest example arrived this week, when Carville picked a fight with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) that had nothing to do with policy and everything to do with electability.
Oliver Larkin, a 33-year-old DSA candidate, ran to unseat Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) in Florida's newly drawn 25th Congressional District. Larkin is a veteran of the 2016 presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and he was the only DSA-endorsed House candidate running in a genuinely competitive congressional swing district this cycle. He picked up support from far-left media figures along the way, including Hasan Piker. Larkin told Fox News this past weekend that "it may be time" for Carville "to take a back seat, to people with fresh ideas."
Carville was not about to let that comment slide. He told Fox News Digital that Larkin "has the attribute of every DSA member in the country, and that is he has a motor mouth." Then he added a line for good measure. "He fits right in," Carville said of Larkin.
Moskowitz had the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in his corner, along with quiet backing of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Something tells me that in a heavily Jewish district, Larkin's anti-Zionist rhetoric, paired with his alliance with Piker, likely sealed his fate, and Larkin, not Carville, wound up with egg on his face, because he lost.
ICYMI: The Democrats' 'Big Tent' With Socialists Is Doomed. Here's Why.
In a Monday appearance on Fox News' Jesse Watters Primetime, Carville turned his attention to democratic socialists generally. "They're a bunch of silly people… a pack of fools," he said.
🚨 WHOA! James Carville just SLAMMED Democrat socialists: “They’re a bunch of silly people. Those DSA people are a pack fools. No-one pays attention to them.” pic.twitter.com/CrBwlBitdY

Hey, I’m glad he said it. But here's the problem with handing Carville credit for this: He isn't going after socialism because he finds it morally objectionable. He said he likes AOC and thinks she's talented, for crying out loud. He's going after socialism because he knows it loses elections. This is a man who has openly called for Democrats to pack the Supreme Court and add new states to the union, all in the name of building a permanent Democrat majority. That is not exactly a moderate agenda.
Is Carville really less radical than the DSA wing he loves to mock? Not particularly. He just sees the Democrat Party as the vehicle for the transformation he wants, and the DSA as the political roadblock to what is, frankly, the same endgame. Larkin and his fellow travelers want to burn the vehicle down and build a new one. Carville wants to keep driving it, with himself and his allies at the wheel.
That is the real reason he thinks DSA candidates are fools. I don’t think it has anything to do with their ideas being too far left for his taste. It has everything to do with the fact that openly chasing those ideas keeps costing Democrats winnable seats, and Carville has never cared about much beyond winning.
