On Wednesday, we learned that a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal had been reached. It’s not a perfect deal, as it appears that it only includes 33 hostages, but it’s progress nonetheless — progress that Joe Biden will want credit for but deserves none.

It should not be forgotten that for over a year, Biden has failed to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The last hostage released was Abigail Naftali, the great-niece of major Democratic donor Liz Hirsh Naftali, who also happens to be one of the buyers of Hunter Biden’s artwork. This isolated success stands in sharp contrast to the ongoing plight of numerous American hostages still in captivity.

Biden’s inability to make any significant progress in freeing these hostages after all this time has drawn intense criticism, especially considering the continued suffering of American families. Despite repeatedly claiming to be working tirelessly on their behalf, the weakness displayed by his administration left Americans trapped in Gaza for over a year with little hope for their safe return.

In contrast, Donald Trump has shown a starkly different approach. It is likely no coincidence that this deal was reached a week after he held a press conference warning of severe consequences for Hamas if hostages aren’t returned once he reclaims the White House.

Biden’s words and threats had no impact on Hamas, but the looming threat of Trump’s retaliation made a difference. Last week, Trump promised that if he were president, “all hell will break out in the Middle East” should Hamas continue holding Americans hostage. His words signaled swift and no-nonsense action — a marked contrast to Biden’s hesitation.

The announced deal shows that Trump’s tough stance made an impact. While Hamas has not yet made an official statement, the approval of the deal by Hamas’ military leader, Mohammed Sinwar, suggests that it is taking Trump’s threat seriously. This agreement marks the beginning of a process to release 33 hostages, including women, children, and the elderly, as well as a partial ceasefire, with more hostages expected to be freed in the coming weeks.

The situation mirrors the Iran hostage crisis when Jimmy Carter’s failure to secure the release of American hostages contrasted with their immediate release upon Ronald Reagan’s inauguration. Reagan’s clear, strong leadership led to the hostages’ immediate release, signaling a dramatic shift from the weakness that characterized Carter’s presidency. Similarly, Trump’s approach to the Gaza hostage crisis mirrors Reagan’s: resolute, direct, and willing to back up diplomacy with the threat of force.

The deal between Israel and Hamas, even in its early stages, demonstrates that Trump’s approach works. While our enemies — and even some of our allies — may not like him, they certainly respect his strength. The hostage release and ceasefire negotiations are a clear indication that Hamas recognizes Trump’s power and understands the consequences of provoking him.

While Biden’s administration has struggled to make progress, Trump’s decisive leadership is showing tangible results. The release of hostages and potential ceasefire are just the beginning, but they demonstrate that Trump’s approach is far more effective than Biden’s in dealing with international crises.

Trump’s leadership on the hostage crisis is a reminder of the strong, results-oriented diplomacy America needs. His willingness to act decisively in the face of danger positions him as the new Reagan — a leader who doesn’t hesitate to confront threats head-on for the safety and security of Americans abroad.
